Robert, I have been doing some research. In Texas, bullhead are called mud cats. This may be the case as well in other areas. Apparently they are muddy tasting when taken from warm water and pretty much considered bait or trash fish. In cold water, like where I catch them around here, they are quite taste when the dark meat is removed. I hope this helps in you attempt to Identify what fish I am referring to. Have a good one.

Texas is a big state and I suspect what they are called could well depend on where your at. Robert is in Texas and I suspect he knows what they call them around there.

That would be great if they come around. When I started crappie fishing I really stocked up on them!

Skip the split shot and simply let the bait take the rig down. If your using a jig, go up a weight in the jig.

If I could go anywhere I wanted right now it would be one of the deep south states for crappie. Down there they seem to all be monster's!

My favorite small mouth bass color. Tried them on crappie and have never caught the first one!

I used a wet fly in a river in Colorado one time and the strike indicator was the end of the fly line!

Well I don't fish Crescent Lake, never have. But Cats are hitting now on the John Day near Antelope, Clarno if you know where that is.

Somehow budget friendly and $200 just doesn't work for most people looking for a fishing rod!

Bet you do. What are you trying to catch? Every fish in the lake eats worms!

About the only thing I use is chicken breast with strawberry kool-aide and garlic powder. have tried shrimp but no luck so far. Gonna try it more till the bag is MTY. Everyone say's shrimp is great just hasn't worked for me. Have tried chicken liver on bull heads and don't care for it. Very hard to keep on the hook! Got some recently to try making bags for but not really excited about it. Just seems like to much work to me and being retired, I despise work! years ago when I burned out on chicken liver I tried beef liver on bull heads and it worked great and stayed on the hook really well. hard for me to find any more though. I found calf liver but about as hard to keep on the hook as chicken liver!

As good as chicken breast works for me I suspect any other chicken part would too!

Best bullhead bait I ever used was beef liver. Not calf liver, it's to fragile. Good piece of beef liver you'll catch a good number of bull heads on before needing a new piece. have tried chicken liver in the past and don't doubt it works but a pain the keep on the line. That is exactly what turned me over to beef liver. I have heard that shrimp is really good but tried it for channels out here and so far no lick. Still have some so plan on trying it again. Since starting fishing for channels about all I use is chicken breast with strawberry kool-aide and garlic. I am gonna try it for bull heads one of these days also. I don't use worms at all for cats. Problem is every fish in the water eats worms and cats seem to like dead things and garbage. I suspect bull heads will also! Use worms and never know what might bite!

Have you tried wearing a patch over the bad eye? I had a mussle damaged by a mild stroke years ago and have corrective glass's for it. But now and then forget to put on the right glass's going outdise. Fix is to simply close one eye.

People are strange. They learn something then decide they can improve on it so add their own quirk. Doesn't work rather than go back to the beginning and starting over they rather try something new. Sometime's it works and sometimes it doesn't. problem is the original lesson's get lost in doing. best thing I think is go back start over at the beginning and end at the end. You will find little things that change a bit along the way but you won't if you really don't have the basic's down.

What you wanted was what to fish with on a spinning rod? I used to love fishing on rivers. One of my favorite lure's was a Colorado spinner and a night crawler. Rooster Tails always worked well for me also. Another thing I'd be tempted to try would be salmon egg's under a slip float; did that in Germany and it worked great. Up in Vermont years ago I caught big grasshopper's and they worked great. The bubble and fly I never tried but have heard lot of people do use it. Fly's do work well though I've only used them on a fly rod. Hair wing coachman always seemed to work for me. If I was going to try spinning with a fly I'd definitely get a couple of them. Another thing to consider is a wet fly. In Colorado years ago I was fly fishing and couldn't get a thing till I tried a wet fly. You'll probably need to watch the bubble to know you got a hit. With a fly rod I had to watch for the fly line to move.

Sorry about that first post. I though you were new to fishing and didn't know if you could use spinning gear on a stream!

For catfish I'd look into the Kastking rover reel. I was surprised just how nice a reel it is. Of course nothing better in my book than the ABU 6500, Rover 40 sure give it a run for the money though! No idea what size bass your into but they aren't that big around here. Nice little UL rod and reel should work fine. Let the size of the bass determine the weight line you use. On my level wind casting reel's I generally use 10# to 15# line but then I'm not out looking for big cats either. Anything over about 8# or 9# would get thrown back.

Something I just started trying out is a low profile bait caster with light line for crappie and the like. Have an inexpensive Kastking low profile on an Ocuma Kokanee Pro rod I can cast 1/16th oz jigs with with a 1 1/4" round cork bobber on it. and also a Daiwa RG on a med action Ugly stick I'm liking also. The Daiwa also use's 4# line right now. I read that Kastking has a light weight low pro made for light line, haven't seen one yet but thinking about getting one just to try. Probably most the Schmano's and Garcia low pro's could be made to work also. Something about the rods, I'm finding I like the med action rod better than the UL rod. Seems like the UL rod loads up to much casting and is prone to over run. The med action cast better and I'm thinking because it doesn't over load. I don't attempt long casts with either, simply toss and getting 25 to maybe 30 yds from them. Tried them out on small mouth bass and liked them very well.
