When the Media gets involved in our great sport , things tend to get quite distorted. Much of what they report is totally based on hearsay with little truth or fact being represented. http://fishingfacts.net/musky-myths-the-media-2/ This is how stories like 100 pound Muskies, and 10,000 casts get blown out of proportion! Of all the liars among mankind, the fisherman is the most trustworthy!

Of all the advice and tips I’ve picked up over the years, this best kept secret has helped me the most. http://fishingfacts.net/?s=solunar

When the Media gets involved in our great sport , ... (show quote)

I understand your position and agree with you absolutely. The issue is really very simple. Media looks at fishing just like they did Nascar some years back. When the big money rolled in the lies, BS, and goober opinions vanished. No one dare call Earhart, hillbilly anymore..the dicussion one has to have is with the sponsors. That takes a conserted effort by serious people to get these people out and experience a great sport. It can be done. Billions are spent by sponsors for car racing womens soccer, etc. even little league. got to get the sponsors attention and the media will change immediately.

I feel that those who pay for licenses and frequent the area business' for the various hunting and fishing seasons have a right to have a clean environment to practice their hobby or craft. The politicians have no problem collecting the money and paying lip service to the problem, but this is not cleaning up the waterways. There are many participants in our chosen field and if we are not vigilant in making these people responsible to us there will be no hope of passing down our sports to our children and grandchildren.
I thank you for your response. One of my great joys is hearing from other fishermen, sportsmen, and their trials and tribulations, success' and failures. I am with all of you in spirit. I have to listen to everything that is written, and it sounds interesting from the computer narrator, but either way it is a blessing to hear from you and the others who care to comment.
Best regards, and thank you again

You have too much time to think about what bothers you if that is your complaint. Seriously?

Yes, seriously, as I mentioned, I am a blind cancer patient who used to spend much of my time hunting and fishing all over north and south America. So, since I cannot do that anymore to any real extent, I enjoy listening and responding to some of the commentary here while get chemo therapy etc.
I am sorry you took offense at my comment, but I would "seriously" like to see the people who pay for their right to fish and hunt have a truly powerful voice.
Actually I have very few complaints since I have had a wonderful life in the outdoors. I am grate for every minute of it I spent in the field.
I am sorry you do not feel the same.
My very best regards.

Biggest pet peeve is a group of fishermen who think of ways to hurt someone instead of being part of the solution.
We are a huge group. In virtually every state. Every state has a Department of Natural resourcses, DNR, DEC, what ever you care to call them... Bug them, write to them, call them complain, same to senators, congressmen/women, town and village elders. Make enough noise and it will get attention....Cost them votes and you can bet problems will get fixed. No reason to be nasty, dangerous or rude. We are citizens just like everyone else. We pay for licenses. What are we getting for our money? Nothing but a lot of talk. We need action. Clen up the woods and waterways.
I have to mention that I am a blind cancer patient, but fished and hunted all over north and south america before I lost my sight. I want to see all of you carry on and have a safe, clean place to enjoy the sport we love. By the way, many of the dollars we spend on gear also goes to politicians. Speak up and be heard.
For right now this is still our FREE country. Good luck to you all Enjoy !!!!

I am heading to Osakis lake in Minnesota and will be fishing for like. Be going there on 3rd of September. Will the pike be down deep or back in the shallows? Any help on lures/soft bait ideas would be appreciated.

Welcome: In the morning they will be in the shallows hunting, They will be aggressive. As the day gets warmer they will head for cooler waters and settle in to digest their prey, they will get sluggish and disinterested. Large feathery lures with bright flash will get their attention. Vary the retrieval speed and depths. A beautiful place to fish. Enjoy your trip.
If you can check in with a local shop. Sometimes guides will let you play along. (follow).
Keep your eyes open and watch the logs, tall grasses. Any good ambush spot will hold fish worth photographing.

There are many great resources on line. Take your time and study. The gear is fairly simple and easy to assemble when you are ready. One of the very best instructors are the Japanese bamboo craftsmen. Look for them on line. Not much talking, but lots of info if you are paying attention.
The building of bamboo rods is as much an art as it is a craft.
So enjoy the journey. I will try to send you a list of resources when I make it back to my shop.
Good luck...it is a great experience good for your spirit.

If line is always breaking at the knot, obviously that is the issue. The clinch should help, but if these fish are fighting some before a break off, they may be scoring the line, or rubbing the line against something underwater. Twigs, rocks, whatever. Use 10-15" of a leader attached to your main line. Or, make some leaders out of abrasion-proof line.
Good luck.

Shop & ask around. If there is a good tackle shop in the area, check with them. Sometimes an employee of theirs also charters, which may or may not be a good thing. Check with some local fishermen to see what they have to say, if they speak English, or if you speak Spanish. Good luck and have a good time.

Welcome to the Forum

Before you travel call an American tackle shop near the city you are going to stay in. Many times these tackle shops have guides on the other side of the border who can hook you up. They can and will recommend good folks and will help to keep you safe.
I have been to Mexico several times fly fishing over the years. Sadly, I would not go back there again. It really is not safe and way too corrupt. No matter what everyone wants to believe.

Hi Rick: Have been going to the Salmon for years and have caught some fish, salmon, steel head, nice fish.
I am sorry to say I have never been able to avoid the crowds. The state does not have enough access locations. Simply put. I am always frustrated by having to sneak around to "secret holes" in order to have a decent experience. The folks I have taken there, spring and fall ask me not to take them there again. The crowds are elbow to elbow. I have seen people lined up at a location just to get near the water. It is very frustrating. I also have to say that on occasion the crowds actually get testy and foul words and actions are exchanged. I wish you luck with your purchase, it is a beautiful location and a great fishery. Too bad it is handled the way it is. Good luck.

PS: It also depends on how many gates they open for the flow determining the runs. Sometimes in the summer some of the back holes are nearly dried out.

I am sure there is a Trout USA group, as well as other Fly fishing clubs and groups who will be glad to point you to good streams. The state department of natural resources is also a great place to get info.
Tenkara is the original fly fishing. Welcome to a great way to have a beautiful experience.. Good luck.

Setup is ok, 8# a little heavy for light weight pond fishing. You can get the same strength with 4-6# main with a 2# leader. That would be my choice. Before I start questioning my gear, you need to check your weather patterns and water temps. You also need to watch for fish feeding on insects at the surface. That would clue us to throw some small buggy baits their way instead of firing a noisy, hard body at them. (sorry writers license). You may find that the fish are feeding on the various hatches in the area and not interested in imitations.
Check the water temps if possible. Not just a surface temp, but at various depths and locations (3 if possible). You will learn allot about where you are fishing and absolutely have more success.

follow the breeze...whichever way the breeze is moving the surface water is where the fish will be. Seneca is a highly pressured lake, as are most of the finger lakes. The trick to catching fish there is to follow the breeze. Hope this helps a little. Have fun and good luck. Just a reminder. There are walleye and land-locked salmon in that water in case you did not know. Have fun.
