Lots of folks here in the South still call crappie, both black and white, white perch.

You beat me to it. My old Mitchell 300, which still works fine, was made in France. Now I have an Abu-Garcia spincast reel that my dad gave me for Christmas in 1961 that was made in Sweden. It's also in fantastic shape. I use both of them!

I ate bass just a couple of days ago. They were very good. In fact, I consider them almost as good as the more highly rated crappie and bluegills. As to what to keep, the ponds and lakes I usually fish are often overpopulated with bass, resulting in undersized fish. My practice is to keep the small ones and release the big ones. Still, I now only keep what will be eaten soon. Freezing for more than a short while causes them to be dried out and basically tasteless. By the way, I caught the bass in shallow water - half of them on a fly rod fishing a large black popping bug, which is by far my favorite way to catch them.

Anybody catch them near J. P. Coleman State Park in Mississippi?

I fished Little Black Creek Lake years ago, but have not recently. Mostly I fish small lakes and ponds belonging to friends of mine. I am richly blessed to have generous friends who share! Also, I love to fish small streams.

The most fun fishing in fresh water in South Mississippi, in my opinion, is fishing for bass and bream (bluegills and shell crackers) with a fly rod. If you still want to catch walleyes and smallmouth bass in Mississippi, you will need to go to Pickwick Lake and the streams that flow into it in the extreme northeast corner of the state.

There are no walleyes in South Mississippi and there are no smallmouth bass and no northern pike in the Wolf River or any other river in South Mississippi. I don't know where that came from. But there are plenty of largemouth bass and, even better, spotted bass, which compare in fighting ability with any fish anywhere! I'm in Poplarville, just a few miles up the road from Diamondhead.
