The pond is at south shore. Just the regular fishing permit to fish there.

That’s a great idea Ben. I volunteer with a group who takes special needs kids fishing. Even if you can’t hook-up like a group like this bring an extra rod and reel like this and sooner or later you’ll run a cross a kid who needs something better than what he has. I’ve helped kids like this who really had no idea what he was doing. So I would rig and bait him up, give him some extra tackle.

Both reels, I believe, we the lower end of their respective lines, but they were not junk. They could continue to serve you well.

True ultralight is a 5’-5-1/2’ ultralight rod with 2lb test. As a kid when I started I had a 7’ light action rod with 2lb test. That’s all I had.
My personal best trout when 12lb. on 2lb best.

I remember that rod and reel combination. Don’t remember the name or manufacturer but I do remember it.
Hey, if it works for you, great.

I go with a 5’ to 6.5’ rod depend on the water I’m fishing. Mitchell 310x or equivalent, with 2lb test. Mostly spinners, Rooster Tails, Panther Martins, etc. or small spoons. The smaller, the lighter the better. Flys and bubble are great.

One bait, night crawler. Never a guarantee, but if I could use only one bait that would be it.

If your line is sticking the back of your spool, it sounds like the line is too loose. Take off all the line from your reel and respool, making sure the line is tight. One old tip is to run your line through a big book, maybe half way through the pages.
My opinion, you don’t need braided line gif trout pans/ bluegill. Four pound test is plenty. I use 2lb test.
Tight lines.

I started with Mitchell 308/408. Still have them still used them for everything from trout to bass to saltwater perch and jacksmelt. Still work great.
I then went to ABU Cardinal 752. Great reels, but sold them or gave them to friends just starting out fishing.
Tried Shimano Sidestab 1000. Started using them for trout, but found them on the heavy side and now use them bass. Love the fighting rear drag.
Bought a pair of Mitchell 310x. Absolutely love them. Had a total of four. Two broke down and I still have one that works.
What to replace them with? The Pflueger President was my first choice, however I couldn’t get what I wanted. My second choice was the Shimano Sienna. I’ve only used it once, I am pleased with its performance.
My point is that no matter how many reels I’ve owned, and no matter what recommendations are here, you need to choose what works best for you.
Good luck and tight lines.

I work with special needs kids, fishing.
1. There is a lot of information out there on the internet, library, friends, co-workers, church members, local bait shops etc. Start asking questions and gathering information. This was a good place to start.
2. Because the kids are beginners (you didn’t indicated ages) you can go to Walmart and get Zebco spin cast combos for around $15.00. Get something a little better for yourself. They can upgrade as they get older. Learn to use everything yourself so you can help them. If you know another fisherman that will go with you so much the better. I agree with Steve D. Do not take all 6 at once, maybe 2-3 at a time.
3. You can take in all the suggestions and tips from the previous contributors. I can add my two cents, but at this point you are probably at fishing information overload. Keep in mind that what may work for me or a dozen other people my not work for you.
Tight lines to you.
