One thing most folks who buy or make their own "survival" fishing kits should always do is try that kit in a real-life, non-survival situation so you'll know exactly what to expect. Because a life-or-death survival situation is the last place you want to perform field tests to find out if they're going to work or not. In a survival scenario there are no mulligans (that's do-overs if you're not a golfer).

I make an emergency fishing kit that will fit into a large straw that is cut to length and then the ends sealed with a lighter and a pair of pliers. Three small hooks, with spider wire wrapped around them, a few split-shot and done. the entire thing is a little over an inch long and less than a 1/2 inch in diameter.

Another one is made with a small medicine bottle filled with hooks, weights, small lures like jigs and spoons and the line is wrapped around the bottle.

You also might think about a Popeil Pocket Fisherman. They are small and actually do work pretty well if you get the original and not a knock off.

Look up "Cuban Yoyo". I have caught some good sized fish with those things.

Emmrods work great but are a bit pricy. Look them up to.

then there are all sorts of travel rod and reel kits.

Excellent advice, TexDanm! And some nice little survival kit ideas.

Search for "Uncle Josh" on ebay. Lots of stuff available. But bring money. Lots of it.

Lol, Here's my survival kit a friend gave me on my last birthday. I assume it does function, guess I should put line on the reel and keep it in my glovebox.

I've seen a few reviews of those little bait casters and they don't free-spool, so casting would only work with really heavy weights. They're basically made for sitting in a boat or on a dock or on shore, dropping your line over the side, and still-fishing.

Thanks for in info,I have seen the steel models ,some with pretty good reviews other ,not so good.I did like the idea of the "plastic" one by Rapala because it floats?? But agree PLASTIC is PLASTIC and probably won't hold up as good.I fish a lot of Walleye and Pike here and all but the biggest of them seems to me that a grabber would be a handy tool ? I'll look into the Boga model and consider your advice. TY

Actually, different plastics display different tensile strengths. Polycarbonate plastic, for example, is almost twice as strong as polypropylene. So, no, PLASTIC isn't PLASTIC.

Here's a website that ranks fish grippers:

The Boga Grip 315 runs from $125 to over $200 on Amazon while the Rapala is in the $10 to $15 range.

Enjoy!

Hope this is not a dumb question but I just gotta ask I hear a lot about full moon and high tides and to go fishing 3 days after or before full or new moon now does that count also like in canals rivers ponds or lake or just like saltwater...because I do hear if you go salt water fishing after full moon usually not many luck catching because well the fish were all night eating I just wanted to know if any of it true and if the full/new moon affect freshwater also

According to John Alden Knight, fishing and hunting are dependent on the relative positions of the sun and the moon: the Solunar Tables. And, yes, they apply to freshwater as well as salt water.

I'm sure I'm not the only one cause I see them everywhere. My decals are peeling off of my motor. I think that as much as a motor cost that Mercury should replace these decals that I cant seem to find to match. The decals are junk. As many people that loves Mercury the Company should replace these at no cost to the owner
This just sucks. Every time i just wipe my boat down after a day of fishing a little more flakes off. Am i right about this?

I'm curious to know why you think a replacement decal--no matter who pays for it--would be any different than the original as far as flaking off, especially since you see it everywhere. Is it having any effect on the performance of the engine?
However, if you get new decals--no matter who pays for them--then put a coat or two of Clearcoat over them like motorcycle manufacturers do with gas tank decals. That should stop the flaking

Id like to go to Antietam and detect there for awhile

As long as you do it on privately owned land with the owner's permission, you can use a metal detector at Antietam. Metal detectors are not allowed on federal or state Antietam property and it's a felony to remove any artifacts from federal and state property there.

My Hummingbird Piranha 175 cuts out after about 10 minutes. Fuse is good. Battery is strong wires are good. Any ideas?

One of your chips or your LCD screen is overheating. Take the cover off, aim a fan at it and turn it on. See if it takes longer than no fan to stop working. Basically, you probably won't see anything visible since it's all solid state. Contact Hummingbird service. Is it under warranty? If so, contact them first before you start removing screws so you don't lose the warranty.

I'm looking into maybe starting fly fishing what's a good beginners fly rod and reel Preferably under 50 dollars.

Here's one from Gander. It comes with level fly line, which isn't ideal, but you can replace it with weight forward line for about $20 if you're not too particular about quality. It's going to be tough to get into the game for under $50 but it can be done. I've had some truly terrible fly rods in my life but I stuck with them and learned. When I finally got some good rods, I was amazed at how well they cast with so little effort. If I had started out with them I probably wouldn't have thought they were very good, making the mistake most people make that it wasn't me, it was my gear. LOL! Learn on the poor stuff. When you can afford to move up to better things I think you'll appreciate them more. But if you can afford better, than don't cheat yourself to save a buck just because you can. Basically, stay within your means, no matter how much or how little you have. No one's going to rely on a fly rod for survival. Grub first, then finesse.

This caronavirus pandemic is serious stuff. I don't have a bunker and I'm not paranoid but, our pantry is well stocked, loaded up on gas for the generator, and pulled a few thousand $ cash just in case banking system fails. Now I'll be a home body, just makes sense to me.

If the banking system fails, those few thousand $ cash will just be toilet paper, and not very good toilet paper at that. Spend it now on trade goods. No one is gonna want anything they can't eat, wear or use for basic survival.

There's a place over on the coast on Tomales Bay, north of San Francisco, called The Hog Island Oyster Company that has its own oyster beds. They harvest daily right there on the bay, and you can't get any fresher than what they sell. My wife and I get over there at least twice a year to eat. They serve raw on the half shell with "hog wash" and barbecued on the half shell with bourbon butter. I don't know which one I like better. You can check them out online and they have recipes for the hog wash and the butter. Another place I order from is Wallala Oysters out of Washington. They harvest and ship the same day. I've never been disappointed.

Thanks for the Hog Island site! I'm going to try a few of their recipes; they look and read delicious. Can't wait to taste them before oyster season ends.
