I just spent a few weeks there as a first time visitor and found numerous public beaches well worth spending time at for fishing. Shell Beach and Florida Point come to mind as they are close to the big bridge that crosses the opening from the inshore waterways to the ocean at a place called Perdido Pass. Fishing under Perdido Bridge and along the Westerly "wall" near the Gulf Restaurant might be a good place as well if you try places away from where you are staying.

I believe that the tidal water movement is around a foot or so, and when running thru narrow areas the current can be swift. You do not really notice it very much when just at the beach.

There are self serve "pay to park" stations scattered at all public places that you will encounter unless you are just fishing right out in front of your lodging. Free parking is available if you tuck in to some nooks and crannies. Most of the beach parking spots offer a fairly short walk with your gear to reach the water from your vehicle....although FL Point is about a 1/4 mile or so on a boardwalk.

I would highly recommend picking up a copy of a regional map (Pensacola Area) from a series that is published by a company out of Pasadena TX called "Top Spot, Inc.". I found the map to be invaluable as I visited numerous places to fish during my stay in Orange Beach. I picked mine up for $20 at J & M Tackle on Canal Road near Cypress Street.

Based on the time of season you plan to be there, it looks like redfish, speckled trout and flounder will be potential target species aside from whatever may be cruising by the shorelines to pick up your baits or strike a lure.

Depending on how much fishing you plan to do, it might be worth getting a 7 day license for both AL and FL so that you have extra areas to cover...although I did find that the AL fishing kept me plenty busy!

Thank you for the info sir. I've fished off the Dauphin Island Pier a few times when down visiting relatives but haven't been east towards that way. My idea is for my bride and I to get a condo on the beach in October and I can go sit in the morning and see what happens.

Looking to spend a week or so down in the Orange Beach, Gulf Shores area in late September/October and was wondering if anyone new of a good stretch of beach to fish. Probably going to book a vrbo on the beach and would like to do a little shore fishing in the morning. thanks in advance, Mark

Stayed at Wild Wings Campground the last few days. Did great about 4 miles out west of A can. Bandits, deep husky jerks and reef runners did a great job. Mostly purple colored or a clown pattern were best. We were in 25-27' of water and fish were suspended every day about 15' down. Must have been a temp layer they liked for feeding or something. Put some fish in the freezer for summer fish frying and cooking some today for friends. Had a blast with an old school friend was the best part.

I think OP was going to UP. Yes sir, I've done that stair climb in the early spring when there was only about a foot of railing sticking up through the snow a few times lol. Years ago when snagging was legal I've had a couple friends tell me their dad would make them wear snowmobile helmets to protect them from flying lead/hooks.

Where in the UP are you planning on going? Lots of ground to cover. Personally I've done well on the Two-Hearted River along the Superior shoreline on the north side. Menominee River in Menominee gets a good run and done well. that's about it for me. maybe you'll get some good info from someone up there.

Lucky you to be on Dauphin Island. One of my favorite places. Took the boys fishing on the east end on a pier once and caught some different stuff. Nothing too big but saw someone get spooled when a boat left the marina.
Can always go to Skinners if the fish don't cooperate lol.

I'm sorry I don't have any recommendations. A quick Google showed 3, 5-star rated charters in Petoskey so you have some good choices. Traverse Bays are the furthest North I've fished in our boat so I'm not sure what's hitting up there that time of year but there's good lake trout out deep and smallmouth along the shoreline.

Petoskey has a nice pier you can go out on and fish. Depending on what time of year there is the Bear River that comes right through Petoskey by City Hall and is a good salmon/steelhead spot when the run is on.

Thank you for the info, things are waking up! Haven't been down that far for a few years. (late 80's) We used to do a little group trip down there mid April and troll the shoreline with stickbaits. We did well on browns, coho, steelhead and once in a while a king. I remember getting a king on once and having to pull lines and planer boards in to chase it down. Fished with 10' rods with 8# as we used them river fishing too.
How is brown fishing now?

Hello Cougar, we used to fish that too below the damn back in the late 80's. Had good success when they were running good. Seems like there was a railroad bridge downstream a little bit that had some good gravel stretches? We also used to hit the White River north of there and catch some. I remember the walleye being pretty thick about same time and letting a lot go because season was closed lol.

We used to fish between Green Cottage Access and upstream towards town. I think it's artificial flies only to Gleasons Landing. Take 72 west off 37 and then North on Peacock. I'd have to do some reading of the rules.

Here is a map.

You can probably get a lot more (better) info at Baldwin Bait and Tackle. I think catch and release on the brown trout through there but not steelies.
