I'm having trouble tying 25 pound fluoro to 50 pound braid and making the knot low profile.

I'm heading to pike waters and am not keen on losing fish lol.

Any recommendations?

Spend some time learning to "read the beach". There are a number of you tube videos that can give you some basics.

Anyone know a good pier on the York River or nearby area to catch striper?

Never seen many stripers from piers but youcould try the ones in Yorktown or just across the river in Glouchester.

If I'm using 6lb braid what should I use for leader?

If you are fishing very clear water you might want a flouro leader. Seaguar 8 or 10#.

Since left handed baitcasters came out I’ve been using them exclusively, have always used left handed spinning reels. My saltwater buddies all have right handed retrieves and it simply feels odd and clumsy for me to hold the rod in my left hand and crank with the right.

I guess it depends on where and how you fish. Fishing primarily saltwater means rust is always an issue and having a good pair of clippers when rigging is a necessity. Those S&W pliers are pretty - now, but I don't think they would last a year with regular use in a saltwater environment.

For me titanium and replaceable cutting blades is the only way to go. Donnmar and Van Staal both make pliers that will last you a lifetime. If you want to pay for that.

All these can help you out:

Rodanthe - Hatteras Jacks
Avon - Frank & Frans
Buxton - The Red Drum

Lots of specks and drum in the sound now. Some pompano, mullet, and a little of everything else oceanside.

Depending on your equipment and whether or not you have an ORV makes a difference.

Howard stop in at Hatteras Jacks in Rodanthe see Ryan White he'll hook you up

Ryan will hook you up.

Cut mullet, shrimp, squid, and fish gum/bytes are all good possibilities for off the piers.

Small crabs by the pilings for sheepshead.

I’ve cast some lines off the surf about two times now. I haven’t caught anything but I’m trying to learn the troughs and waves to find good spots for fish. This may be a dumb question…

My question is, how do I tell when I have a fish. The rod in the holder always seems to bend (I’m guessing from the waves and current) making it look like a fish is on but when I set the hook obviously nothing is there. Should I turn the drag down to hear when it pulls or will the rod really bend significantly for any size fish.

I’m used to freshwater pond fishing and feeling bites in those scenarios. It’s very hard to tell when I’m casting bucktails or just bait out with the sand and current and such.

If your rod is bending a lot you may not have enough weight or the right sinker to keep you in one spot. Lots of times the waves and backwash may make your rod twitch especially if you are fishing close to the lip. With most saltwater fish you will know when you have a bite.

I keep them in the original bag. Some brands do not play well with others.

A 14 day season is ridiculous. The recreational impact on the flounder fishery is minimal compared to the commercial fishery impact. IMO this is a blatant snub to the recreational fishermen while ignoring the the damage being done commercially.

Been in Waves, NC (OBX) for 2 weeks. Have not been able to fish much. The wind has been terrible. Got to go a few times. Caught mostly sea mullet (whiting), couple of croakers and a few blues. Also a couple of skates.

The nice thing about Waves is that although you are on an east facing beach you can go south to get to southern facing beaches where there are often different wind conditions. The sound side offers some great fishing as well. Wind is pretty much a constant at OBX and if you had ever stayed there when the wind died down you would wish for it back.

Check out the shoreside just south of Davids Point off the southern tip of Great Island.
