Yes and do not just flatten the barbs. I either buy barbless hooks or Dremel the barbs off. I have had an anal F&G use a cotton swab to check my hooks. I was OK but others got tickets.

Agree with the inflatable if you are a swimmer but make sure it is not automatic. You want it to inflate only if you pull the cord. You can also blow them up by mouth and it is a good idea to check it on a regular basis. You are required to wear the inflatable vests if you have one. Regular vest I use a Lotus. Wife has a Stohlquist for women.

I keep an emergency bag with me. Water purifier, lighter, tinder, 1 piece knife, mylar blankets, tent stakes, tarp and cordage. Braid makes good cordage. Wind it flat on a plastic card. You can use more strands if you need more strength. Got caught in a sudden storm with the kayaks and the tarp came in handy when we beached. Rained hard for about 20 minutes. Mylar blankets will help keep you from going hypothermic.
