I am pretty sure I ate a ca state record size black crappie way back
In 1993.
I had 6 fish on a stringer that weighed 18 lbs
One of the had to weigh over 2.2 kilos.

Little piece of squid on a 1/0 eagle claw bait holder hook.
Squirt it with WD40
Wait and see!

Not much fresh water fishing near Santa Cruz. It’s pretty dry there most of the year. You have to head up to the Sierras. Mono county is pretty incredible for fly fishing. A lot of the streams and rivers are very protected so pay attention to that too.

I was taught to use a balloon to drift sturgeon rig out far off the Benicia pier years ago!
Brings back some great memories Glenn!
Starry Flounder that day was what I caught.
I’ll have to check out San Luis res.
It’s not too far from me.
Good Luck to you All!

I caught a 5 foot leopard off emeryville marina shoreline across the bay from SF.
I let my 6 year old son reel it in for the better part of the fight.
It’s the one fishing memory he speaks about every time fishing comes up!
We had a big family bbq the next day.
Nothing was wasted.
End of summer is the best time to fish for them here in Nor Cal.
I Use midshipmen for bait or if those aren’t available Cut BullHeads or Squid or Trout.
Trout is like Shark Candy.

Leopard Shark is Excellent!
Caught them in SF Bay and off Drakes beach and in Tomales bay Ca.
Extremely Fun to fight!
Solid white meat!
No bones to deal with!
Bleed them first by cutting the tail just in front of the tail fin after catching!
Wonderful steaks BBQ with Cajun seasoning!!
I Love them!!

Hi Carmon,
Welcome!
Threadfin Shad (butterfly cut), anchovies, grass, ghost and Mudshrimp, mackerel, squid, mud suckers, gobies, pileworms, clams, herring row and old Left over freezer burnt Trout.
These are Baits I have used and caught Striper in the Sacramento Delta and SF Bay.
I heard a 10year old kid hooked a nice one on a hotdog once but I’m not sure if it was true!
Not sure if all of these baits are allowed in San Luis Res.
Someone here on line will know and be able to help!

I use a Shimano baitrunner when I fish stripers.
Sometimes I use a penn 309 depending on where I’m fishing. How fast the current is etc.
We Learn something new every day!😃

If you want to go north for about an hours drive, in Prescott there are a few lakes that hold sizeable Bass.
Watson lake, Goldwater lake. Lynx lake and willow springs lake.
Watson is just outside of town. All within 15 minutes of Prescott.
Elevation is about 5600 ft.
Beautiful area.
I have family in that area and visit once a year.
Love it.
