I have heard of these but never caught one. They do look a great deal like a rock bass. An easy way to know it’s a rock bass is they will have red eyes. Thanks for the pictures.

Thanks for the response Papa. The pictures are not of good quality...sorry. But the Warmouth eyes are red also. The purple hue is distinctive also

They like rock banks, fight like bluegill, but their mouths are bigger.
Fun to catch!

Thanks for the reply Randy. According to my research they also like to hide under tree stumps and in deep rooted grasses. They are very impressive fighters for their size. Great matchup with the ultralight setup.

I have heard of one, but have yet to catch one! Looks like a bada$$ bluegill.

Thanks for the reply. Yup...first 2 Warmouth for me. Ya they are a member of the sunfish family and fight like a Bluegill on steroids.

I have never caught one of those either, they must like crawlers, all freshwater fish do. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Flyguy.....NE Ohio waters accommodate them but not so much in NW Ohio. They like to dwell around tree stumps and deep rooted grasses. they are very good fighters for their size. Great ultralight matchup

Pretty little buggers. They even take a large hook. New one for me, never heard of warmouth. Nicely done!
Thanks Smokey.....They are a nice looking fish with a purple tint. They are part of the sunfish family. Good observation on your part....their mouths are larger than other panfish like Bluegill etc. That was a #6 Mustad baitholder hook he took on.

As I was reeling the first one in I thought I had a black crappie...hmmm hadn't caught one of those in a while...then as I got it out of the water thought I had a Rock Bass...never caught one of those. Well after a quick picture and safe release, I caught a second one. To make a long story short after some research I was told that they were actually Warmouth. First ones for me ever.

I love taking my 6yr. old grandson fishing with me every week. He is truly a student of the sport that hones his skills with each outing.
