Striped Bass are present in the Umpqua and Smith rivers the entire year. They are one of the hardest fighting fish in the river, but also one of the most difficult to locate and catch. Late March through May are considered the best months for catching stripers as they tend to school and feed heavily as they prepare to spawn. Casting or trolling with large plugs, plunking with a variety of baits or fishing live bait under a bobber are all techniques we use to catch the stripers. Our striped bass average between ten and 20 pounds with a chance at catching a fish weighing more than 30 pounds.

Hello everyone
I'm looking for some good fresh water fishing holes .Pretty much a newbie to Northern California. Need some

You have several high producing rivers for Salmon and Steelhead almost in your backyard. Try the Klamath, Eel and Smith for starters. The Klamath salmon run usually starts in late August. It also has an August steelhead run which starts about the same time. The Salmon on the Eel and Smith starts with the first good rains usually in November and Steelhead following in mid-December. All of these rivers are dependent on water conditions and you should be checking locally. There are a lot of good guides on all these rivers. Check with local guide associations for info.

I'm surprised that anyone was catching shad that far down on the Sacto. It's pretty late in the year, especially with the low water.

Also. Fish have a very high natural mortality. They are not like other animals where most die of old age. Fish die at a fairly steady rate throughout their lives. Approximately 30 to 60% die of natural causes annually. You cannot stockpile them. A reasonable amount of harvest (selective harvest) does no harm. Filling the ice chest day after day is totally different for slow growing Fish, and is not recommended. Some fish, like eastern trout in Freestone waters, die of spawning stress after 3 or 4 years max, even if they are protected by high minimum size limits.

Hi- where did you get the % of fish deaths and what species? It seems kind of high at the top end. If 60% of a given species die each year there eventually wouldn't be any of that species left to fish for!

Gomsey- I assume you're talking about wanting to fish for Striped Bass. If your asking a question you need to be specific and you need to let people know where your located. As it stands your post is nonsensical.
