I'm sure quite a few regulars will check in with a set up line like that.

For the record, I never have...

Please post again if you do give it a try Apollo. My brother and I have been discussing it for a couple years but can't seem to get over the mental hurdle. It doesn't help that our river was pretty badly polluted during our childhood (pre-Clean Water Act for you old timers) and the only fish we would catch were carp, bullhead, and drum. It's a nice clean smallmouth river now, but we still seem to have some reservations about the drum.

I'm only a decade or so behind you Steve, so I do have some familiarity with actual Polaroids. WI isn't exactly a "target-rich" environment like CA though.

What's the standard Fishing Stage commentary? If ya ain't got pictures it never happened?

THIS SAD STORY ILLUSTRATES ONE OF THE MOST SALIENT LESSONS WE LEARN THROUGH OUR LIVES.

It's easy to imagine life as simple---good or bad,but often we wind up with a mix of both that shapes our lives
and our characters, making us who we are.
now the story

One day a man was walking down a path and saw a butterfly cocoon that was about to open.As he watched a small opening appeared in the cocoon. The man sat and watched for an hour or two as the butterfly struggled to emerge through the small hole,.Then it seemed to stop making any progress,it appeared that it had got as far as it could and could get no farther.
the man decided that he could help the butterfly so he used his knife to enlarge the hole in the cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily, but the body was withered and its wings were shriveled.
The man continued to watch ,expecting that at any moment the wings enlarge and open to be able to support the butterfly. But that did not happen,in fact the butterfly spent the rest of it's short life crawling around with a withered body and shriveled wings.
It was never able to fly.

What the man in his good will and kindness did not understand was that the restrictive cocoon and the
struggle required for the butterfly to get through that tiny opening was natures way to ensure that fluid was forced into its body and its wings so that it would be ready to fly when it emerged from the cocoon.

Sometimes struggles are what we need in life.If we were allowed to go through life without obstacles WE would not be as strong as we could have been,it would cripple us.
(NEVER ABLE TO FLY)

I asked for strength but was given difficulties to make me strong
I asked for wisdom but was given problems to solve
I asked for prosperity but was given a brain and a body to work
I asked for courage but was given obstacles to overcome
I asked for love but was given troubled people to help
I asked for favors but was given opportunities
I received nothing I asked for but was given everything I needed

I will live my life without fear.I will confront every obstacle and know that I will overcome it.

STAY SAFE EVERY ONE
THIS SAD STORY ILLUSTRATES ONE OF THE MOST SALIENT... (show quote)

I just passed your message along to my children, who sometimes seem to need more wisdom than I am able to provide on my own.

You might want to try a strap. Loop it around the kayak and over your shoulder. Might take a little adjusting and some practice, but much easier than just grabbing with your hands.

Lots of nice smallmouth in the river through Appleton now, the hard part is finding decent places to fish from shore. Too much development and inaccessible shoreline over the past decade or two. Usually a good bet to go with plastics, and the curly tail (Mr. Twister-ish) baits will find the occasional walleye too. Ned rigs often do well, caught quite a few on a red and white spoon early this year. Live bait will usually produce something in a pinch. Right now the river is so low that the fishing can be pretty tough from shore unless the conditions are just right.

If you use lighter hooks or heavier line, you can sometimes straighten the hook and recover your rig. Not ideal.

I typically go 1/16th on my Neds (occasionally 1/20th), but if you let it sit like you're supposed to it's going down.

Yes, on some of our rivers it's hard to find places to fish it properly. If you're in a boat you have a better chance of recovering some of those, but I often find myself moving it more than I should just to avoid the snags. Sorry, I don't have a solution for you.

Had my Pescador Pilot shipped cross country a couple years back. The first one had virtually no packaging and arrived with a hole in it. They wrapped in cardboard for the second try and managed delivery with a couple significant scuffs. They did send a couple rod holders to compensate for the damage. If I would have waited a year I could have purchased the same boat locally.

Had a similar experience a couple years back. I knew better, but it was 4 in the morning and I wasn't thinking clearly. Was mighty glad I had my PFD, but still a little concerned that the current was going to take me somewhere I didn't want to be before I could get back to shore. Recovered my kayak downstream the next day, so I guess it all worked out.

Questionable professional judgement for a captain that can't seem to put you on fish to also be unresponsive to (legal) customer requests. Glad you didn't feel obligated to tip him.

I agree with Fish Dancer - see if you can demo the model you're considering. I purchased my Pilot when they were first introduced (because I was just waiting for a pedal drive under $2K) and had multiple problems with the drive unit the first time out. Perception stood behind the sale and sent replacement parts to correct the initial design failures. Maybe it was those bad initial experiences or maybe the build quality actually is a problem, but my Pilot still feels less robust/capable than competing models I see at trade shows. I would assume Perception has continued with product development efforts and improved the drive and rudder system since I purchased my kayak, but definitely compare the build quality of those two systems with competitors if you aren't able to take a test drive.
