You use exactly what i use. 1 inch gulp minnows, 1/16th oz. Jig head. Deadly on any pan fish.
Sometimes i use a really small hook with the minnow and let it free fall.
Steady or falling barometer is best, low or bottomed out, really low, stay home.

Do you ever fish lake lansing? Or any other lakes Ingham, eaton, clinton county? I live west of Dewitt. Just wondering?
I have seen a LOT of fish caught on the purple fire tail. All kinds of fish, but especially bass. They do need to be fished slowly.
I once caught two 9 inch gills at the same time on one of these. Think i will try them on a drop shot this summer.
Northerns are awesome fish, good eating to!
My best lures are a blue n silver hot-n- tot, trolled or cast in deep water just off a weed bed.
2nd choice is no. 5 mepps, with a bucktail, 3rd would be a small billed crank bait, dark colors.
Some small mouth in northern Michigan have them, i have caught small pike with them. But never a legal pike.
They are a type of "egg" for lack of a better word. When u find a small white grub thats the next part of there cyle. Most of us have seen a King fisher, [bird], they eat a lot of fish, the parasite is passed thru there intestinal trac back into the water. Not to appetizing.
Sunfish seem have a lot more that gills.
Thanks to all who gave advice on fishing Taos area. You guys are great🐟.
My daughter n son in law are moving to Taos NM. I suspect not a lot of water compared to Michigan. Anyone on the FS have a fishy knowledge of the area?
My tackle box is more than full but i just ordered a new one. Would like to know if anyone has used this before.

I think it looks really "fishey"
In my younger, dumber, days i fished on 2 in. Of crystal clear ice. You could see fish swimming around under u.
Iam older, thankfully, and wiser now.
How about a tried n true "Hot-n-tot" They were catching fish before all the crank bait rage started.
I dont believe that 50% dont survive. Many factors would go into that equation. Species, water quality, time of year. What they were caught on, and the surgical skill of the fisherman removing the hook/hooks.
Just my opinion 🤔
If you are using a "weedless" hook make sure it has the flexible nylon weed gaurd. The wire ones are stiff and will cost you hook ups.
