Remember they might not have walked directly to where they are they might have had to make a lot of turns and read that ice don't walk from the shore directly towards someone and think you're going to get there. You might be sorry and if you're by yourself no one will even see you go in
Locals know where, someone just heading up may be in trouble not knowing the lake. I go out on sketchy ice on lakes I know at the same early ice areas I have fished for years. Haven't fallen through, that is exciting. I know the risk.
I don't have a report but it being a large lake and not that far up north. My experience it freezes when the smaller lakes in southeast Michigan are frozen. They are thin ice as of today.
Did you make it to your dock today?
I like farther north Selfridge area. But people who live there go to Alpena. Everyone wants to be farther north. Visit Houghton lake and the locals are in the UP . Most of 9 mile area is private. Then I realized you might be in a boat. They are still pulling walleyes in that area from boats. Not iced up yet.

Same thing you would use ice fishing shallow waters. Small Jigs tip with wax worm. Show them something they haven't seen you might get lucky. As far as color bright during day dark or glow at night. Copy what guys around you are doing but it's like dancing. Make it your own .
Golden I haven't caught yet. Those are real rare
3rd try. There is the side view
Picture didn't go now it went twice.
Not is kazoo but caught a new rare hybrid crappie yesterday in lake Saint Clare . Thought you might want to see
Or maybe I just want to brag
