I have a new reel and want to buy line for it.I have looked at Dicks, and Bass Pro shop monafilament line can run from 7.00 for 1200 ft to 120.00 braided line runs double and triple that. I in my older years I’m 80 now have tried to upgrade my fishing rods and reals and passed my older stuff to my grand kids mostly trout and bass poles but now I’m starting to get onto surf fishing have two rods and reals but no line yet so my question how much difference will it make fishing the surf in Monterey and Santa Cruz any advice will help me decide what line to buy

Look at it this way, the only thing connecting you to the fish is the line. Get the best you can afford. Good luck, and tight lines. (No pun intended.)

I've caught some ocean salmon off San Francisco years ago and ate it that night. It was the best fish I ever had. Far better than anything in the stores, fresh or farmed. I've often wondered if steelhead and other trout and salmon are equally tasty when fresh.

The wild Salmon and Trout are some of the best eating you can get. Beats the heck out of so called fresh fish you get in a store. There seems to be no way to cook them wrong. I've stuffed and baked, grilled, fried, and smoked about 5 different species, and loved every bit off it!!

I've done business with Tackle Warehouse on numerous occasions. Never had a problem with them.

Looking for best inland Fisheries near where I live Hersey Michigan

My friend, you practically live on both the Muskeegen and Hersey rivers. Houghton lake is not far from you. There is a book you can get (Maybe at your local Walmart) that has maps of a number of local lakes, rivers, and streams. It has topographical maps showing contour line with depths that can help you scout the lakes before you go. Also has list of species. I have found this book to be very helpful in planning a trip to a Lake I've never fished before. One of the best $20 I have invested in my fishing arsenal. Good luck, and tight lines!!

How many times do you go fishing per week?

Seven days a week, weather permitting. I live on a lake here in Michigan, figure I should take advantage of it. Besides, I could also eat fish seven days a week.

I find the powder paint chips even when baked. I now dunk painted lures in clear two part epoxy from West Marine and it gets incredibly durable and shiny. I am just getting ready to try the UV hardening stuff.

If you are getting chipping from your powder paint, your curing process might not what it should be. 350 degrees for about 25 minutes after you have dipped the lure in the powder. I use a fluid cup to get a thin even compete cover of paint on the lure. It's also possible that you are not quite getting the item to be painted hot enough before dipping in the paint. I have never had one chip on me, and since I'm doing several hundred at a time I test one from each run by throwing it as hard as I can on the cement floor of my garage. I've dented several of the heaver jigs, but never had paint chip, yet. Maybe save you a couple bucks and the extra time mixing the epoxy, and waiting for it to dry.

Trying out some powder paint on some spoons

Looks good. That powder paint is great stuff. Easy to work with, and tough as nails. So far have made and given away to friends and family hundreds of jigs, even glow in the dark swimbait jigs for use on the large Chinook Salmon out a Lake Michigan. I really love the stuff!

I dont have a bladder I pee out of a bag on the right side of my stomach but I'm cancer free for 2 years now. Chemotherapy was the worst part of it and it tried to kill me. But I won!

Oh yeah, I remember that check $600 if I remember right. Glad you beat the big C!! Stay healthy my friend, and tight lines!!

[quote=FinFisherman]Papa Bear JD I was born in N E Ohio Trumbull county. City Warren. First 8 years of school in the same school. Because of the work my dad did we spent a year in PA a year in Indianapolis lnd. Then high school 4 different schools. Folks rented our house out while we were moving.[/qu

Born in Cleveland, after a 3 year stint on the Asian Vacation, Moved to Madison (N E Ohio) lived and ran a business there for the next 40 years before retiring and moving to my present residence in Interlochen, about 10 miles south of Traverse City Michigan. Love it up here. The fishing's great and the people are really nice. Was thanked for my service more times in the first 6 months than I was in 40 years in N E Ohio. I wear a POW/MIA hat all the time, and only wear my Vietnam Veteran hat on Veteran's Day.

I only use what I call stink bait liver squid shrimp and most recently smoked bacon oh yes and finger mullet. In the last year I've only been skunked once. Usually I catch more than I can eat so don't need any more.

So far it seems that you use mostly live or natural baits, so the use of a cover scent isn't really needed. I use live bait ( Minnows) for Crappie and often for Pike and would not think of using a cover scent for that. The scents are mostly used with lures like Crankbaits, Swimbaits, Spoons (ect.) Glad to hear you are getting all you need! By the way what part of Ohio where you born in. I'm a transplanted "Buckeye" myself, only I went North instead of South>

Any scent is good, as long as I eliminates human scent

As long as it is not a scent that spooks fish. If I was Salmon fishing, I don't think I'd want to put the scent of a Brown Bear on my lures.

I really don't think human scent scares or is objectionable to fish unless you're running your lures threw your armpit just before you cast them and even then the water washes them off. Why would a grouper eat a pork chop bone after I had it in my hands and my mouth? I believe most scents sold are attractants. Any stink bait attracts catfish. Same with crabs. Trout might be different but I don't think so. I think trout are just finicky eaters. More a sight thing for them.

Man STINKS. Why do you think we where able to survive long enough to figure out how to use weapons, which put us at the top of the food chain? Why is that man eaters are mostly old, sick, or injured animals, that have been forced to prey on man to survive? The Salmon Species find the way back to their birth streams by sense of smell. Think about that for a moment. Quit running your lures through your armpits, use a cover sent and catch even more fish than you are now.
