It's certainly miserable having to go through terrible wild fires, but on the other hand we should look at the positive side of the disasters: Forest/wild fires sparked by natural causes, i.e. lightnings, high temperatures, quakes, etc... are part of the nature evolution on the planet. These fires in a way clean up accumulated contaminants in the wilds, including harmful bacteria; rejuvenating the soil for new generations to come into existence. After all, everything in this universe is just a temporary sojourn through times... In that sense, don't be completely desperate hah! :)
Surf Fishing: Slightly off the subject, but you folks have any expert advises about: When is the best time to look for and catch sand fleas/sand crabs for surf fishing bait, early morning, sun set, evening; low tides or high tides? And, ideal locations along the beach to look for this bait creature??? Thanks!

I have a 78 year old 9 ft. old fashioned bamboo rod together with a condensed-milk tin-can home made reel. I used to steal sewing threads from my Mom's sewing basket to use as my ultimate fishing line in those good old days, hunting pan fishes! This outfit could go to some fishing museum, I think.
Considering the size of the pond mentioned, you have probably cleaned up whatever fishes there were in the pond. So, don't expect to catch many more even if you use wonder baits hah. :)

In Orange County I used to go fish on the Barge. It was the least expensive way to go fishing. You get taken out to a barge in the ocean that is anchored on top of a ship wreck. It costs less than going on a charter boat.
