Good reply to which I'd add that fishing the edges of seaweed provides a lot of action.

DAMN! If you believe that the only way to remove a hook is to cut flesh, I sure don't want to be in a boat with you.
If the barb is embedded but not back through the skin, just hold the shank and press in the direction against the barb and gently back it out. Doesn't hurt much.
If the hook is through-and-through, clip the shank or hook near the skin with a pair of cutting pliers and gently pass it through the hole. A lot like putting in a pierced earring.
Proper cleaning of the wound and an appropriate dressing follows.

This is NOT a big deal, don't make it one.
No cutting, no leather to bite on, no whiskey shots. You're not in a Clint Eastwood movie.

Typically our Central Florida lakes are designated catch & release only due to the presence of heavy metals which renders the fish unsafe to eat in quantity. Most agree that eating it occasionally is okay, though.
Mercury occurs naturally here but other metals come from fertilizers and chemicals used in pesticides and in weed killers (e.g., hydrilla and other invasive species).
Regardless of where you live in Central Florida, your land was once agriculture and we are reaping the results.
