Was lucky enough to get out and catch a nice bluefin Tuna earlier this week. Fished out of San Diego on the American Angler great boat with an amazing skipper and crew.
By chance did you weigh that beautiful tuna. Looks like in the 75 lb class maybe more. Congrats.
I’ve fished it several times. Manly from shore. Fished the dam at San Luis a lot before they closed it to walk in fishing. Caught several stripers in the 12-14 lb class soaking anchovies and throwing big plugs mainly 7” rapalas at night. change to two bigger hooks instead of three they bend the ones that come on the lures. Also got some on hell raiser jigs near the brIdge at O’Neal and same other baits at O’Neal. The bite can get hot right at first light. So be there early.
Both my personal best largemouth caught the same night throwing a 7” gold floating rapala. First one 8 1/2 then the big one latched on a few casts later.
Well I’m not really cheap but always fished for fun and food. But saying that. I wish I would have spent the cash to mount some of them I’ve caught in 50 years of fishing. I caught a 38 1/2 lb stripper at silverwood lake. A 14 1/2 lb large mouth by mistake fishing for stripers same lake. A 22 pound king salmon on 4lb test and a huge Sacramento perch at Crowley lake. Didn’t weigh it but it was as big as the the ones mounted in the lake store. Now I can’t even find pics of them. So spend the money and enjoy them forever. Just sayin.
Hey there. I’m not the one you asked but thought I’d share a recipe. Halibut fillet cut in to about 1-1/2” sguares 1 or 2 quarters butter melted Your choice of ruffles flavored chips I prefer the cheddar cheese but all work well. put in a baggie and smash until broken up into smaller pieces. Not ground. Dip halibut pieces in butter then coat with chips in baggie. I like to dip again in butter then bake 8-10 minutes until done. Then if you like which I do. Dip in butter like you do lobster. I got this from a person in Alaska over 25 years ago and I still use it on halibut I catch. Yummy
thinking of buying a new Avet reel for tuna fishing. anybody have any thoughts or experience with them?
I’ve used about every reel mentioned here. Avets are a good reel for the price. I like the accurate 2 speeds for tuna. I’ve used my Avets for dorado and yellowtail. And have caught schoolie tuna on them with no problem. Just match reel size with fish size you expect to catch and you’ll be good to go. The Raptor 2 speeds would be good to look at.
Nice job. Cold but looks like great fishing. Me and my brother used to hunt x4 years ago. Pretty much the whole eagle lake area until they changed it. After the morning hunt we would hit the jetty rocks and catch trout till the evening hunt. Big beautiful fish with bright pink meat. Yummy
