To me it looks like a Pike, with Tiger Stripes...which I have never seen! So Green! Stripes instead of spots...My only Muskie Experiences (in Ontario), and lake Charlevoix Mi., were distinctly Bronze/Gold and striped, but less defined, exclusively summer, and exclusively Surface Explosions...tough for Ice Fishing...As they Co-exist, Breed on same season, and are biting/kissing cousins, who knows what Hybrid mates were/are created in the Great White North...I was hooked at about age 12, when I caught my first Northern who discreetly followed my classic Daredevil until about 6 inches from shore, at which time it exploded out of nowhere and almost hit my foot, scrabbled back in and almost broke my Zebco...But I got him...

Love your pike intro, very similar to mine. My first pike through the ice was less than 3ft of water but seriously lit me up in my senior year. I have since 1975 dreamed of catching muskie and now with a late start. Fascinating fish. Lake Charlevoix? I live close to the lake here in Boyne City.

Nice catch Ryp! First Muskie I have heard of caught thru the ice…

Thanks! Muskies break all the rules. One guy I spoke with lost a 45”+ at the hole because he was set up for bluegill with a jig, small jigging pole and 4# line. He showed me a video taken by a bystander with the loss. Said he fought it for 2 hours. This was on one of our several muskie lakes. I don’t expect anyone to believe it and I didn’t when first hearing of it last year. Then I met him 2 nights ago when I caught the little one.

You have the patience of Job! What an awesome fish that finally fell prey to natural instincts and grabbed a meal right in front of your camera! Congratulations on a beautiful catch!

Thank you! What a thrill. But then, it’s that surprise we all get when ice fishing!

After diligenty fishing summers and winters trying to catch my first muskie, last night I scored. Though small, I still celebrated mostly because this is a small lake and has large pike and muskie in rather good numbers.
-so can this be a tiger muskie or the barred color variation muskie? There are two strong giveaways for a Tiger. One, the unbroken bars. Two, the rounded fins and tailfin similar to northern pike. Our Michigan DNR says it is rare but possible and occuring for a Tiger to result with a natural mating of the two species. I’m guessing this rare occurence would have an increased possibility in a very small lake.Note: the DNR shut down the Tiger muskie planting program 32yrs ago. Definately not a plant.

Here is the catch from last night. Watched it on camera circle bait and tease me for an hour before snapping at the shiner:

Ford put a lot of chemicals in drums, floated them out in the lake on a barge, and dumped them. The drums are now rusting thru and the chemicals are slowing being released. Many other companies have done this, but Ford might have been the first.

Back in the 1970’s when Lake Erie was declared dead. I remember those days.

I’ve fished the lake since December, always had decent safe ice. Today about 6-7”

Thank you Ryp! I'm thinking about investing in a larger cylinder too! The one pounders are nice and tiny for transport, but a bit pricey unless you start re-filling them from a larger unit. I hope you struck paydirt on the ice fishing today!

I went this morning to fish for a couple of hours before family was arriving and only caught one measly perch...and too small too keep. I was in the same spot...but accompanied by over 50 other groups! Inside the shanty all I could hear was the sound of gas, drill and hand augers making swiss cheese out of the lake ice. The frequent sounds of Jet Sleds being towed by stampeding elephants were filling in the remaining dead spaces with enough echoes to bring an East Coast whale up the St. Lawrence Seaway!

That is Saturday fishing traffic for yah! The word must have gotten out from how folks did a few days ago! No worries though...it's a free world and nobody owns the lake! It was more fun to see all the commotion than it was to fish!

I leave the big tanks at home and use the adapter to refill the little 1lb tanks taken out on the ice. At 8.00ea those things make it expensive…so I refill it off the RV 30lb’ers.

Good job ‘Yaker, that’s a busy day catching perch. Nice pics, too.

I just picked up that same heater and with the refill adapter to use the RV 30#ers as a refill station.

Headed out to Saint Clair in a few hours, God willing. Going to be a fun day.

We have the Northern Pike up here but they are all fun to catch. Where you have smaller ones, you also have bigger. Nice catch.

Here in Emmet and Charlevoix with the warmer barely freezing or 35deg highs, I’ve noticed ice once formed and little if any snow, ice accumulates 1/2” per day. Reason being, that 35deg high is only a few hours and the lows of 25deg are all night. Ice will form and even now is forming. I had 6-7” on Huffman lake near Gaylord. Crooked is fishable. Paradise (Carp Lake) is fishable. Susan lake is fishable. If you need extra thick for atv/sled etc you may have to be patient. For some, 2 1/2-3” is fine. But definately get out and check, you might be surprised.

where can you catch them. nothing close to my area

No where closer than Torch Lake? Not sure about Otsego. They like deeper cold water so you could probably start there.

Can you eat them

Absolutely. I’ve not caught one but plenty around here will target them like whitefish, cisco and walleye. Burbot is among the best.
