Bruce is this the first time you will be towing as well? If so I would suggest go to a large empty parking lot and practice backing up.

Remember all the practice we all had before getting our drivers licenses. Put up some cones with poles / sticks in them so you can see them and back the boat between them a few time until you are comfortable.

Thanks for the response....great idea đź’ˇ

Nice boat! My recommendation is that you put guides on the trailer with small dim lights on top. These guides will assist in KNOWING where the trailer is tracking when backing down the ramp when unloaded. They will also serve as guides for loading the boat onto the trailer. The lights are for loading at night. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the response.....every suggestion is appreciated

Look up online and register for a coast guard safety and operators course. You can do the course online also. You need to know the rules of the road. There are street sign in the water but you need to learn how to read them.

Thanks for the response. I am currently taking g an online course.

Looks like the perfect fishing boat. Buy a paddle, and a tolling motor. Make sure the plug is in and you have a life jacket. You should be able to take it out by yourself. First couple runs I would stay relatively close to the dock just in case you have to paddle back. Buy an anchor. You are in for a treat. Good luck.

Thank you Richard....good advice

Good thinking on getting educated first. Check for local fishing clubs, people with boats in the driveway. Local boat marina or dealerships may also be a place to seek advice. Ask some questions to insure the person(s) you select are knowledgeable to begin with.

Thank you for your response.

I've always wanted a small boat. My nephew gave me a 14' aluminum Grumman boat for Christmas. I sent the 9.9 Johnson motor to the local marina and replaced the water pump and changed the gear oil. Bought a new battery and filled the gas tank and added the 2 cycle oil. Had them go over it and they told me it was in very good condition. Ok...so I registered the boat and trailer and added it to our insurance policy. Well now that its ready to go right? I had an epiphany....I don't t know ANYTHING about unloading, loading or operating it. I've watched dozens of You Tube videos but they were not very informative. So here I am asking if anyone would be willing to spend a day with me and teach me what I need to know. I am willing to pay for your time and you get a day on the water. I am in North East Ohio very close to Walborn Resevoir. Thanks in advance

I have a LaCross 5’ ultralight that my son gave me. I love it. I don’t normally spend that much for a rod. Input a Pflueger President on it, not sure of the actual size but needless to say it’s small. I love this setup I have caught 2-1/2 pound bass on this and it’s a blast

thank you....

I have to second that on the Pflueger President Reel. Great all around ultralight/light reel depending on which one you buy. Starts at about $59. Better than more expensive reels. I pair it several different rods all under $100 or they sell it as a combo for $79 or so

Thank you.....

If you want to stay around $100, it is hard to beat an Okuma rod paired with a Pflueger President spinning reel. Rod length is up to your choice, and reel size is based on the line capacity you desire. I will have to get you the model # of the 2pc rod I have, though. Shimano and Daiwa also make excellent reels, but it all depends on your budget. St Croix makes great rods, but can push the budget up another $50-100. Good luck!

Thank you.....My budget is about $200 max

I'm not familiar with either of the setups you mentioned. Are you looking for spinning or conventional? I own both. You can buy a decent spinning rig for a reasonable price. Conventional not so much. Probably gonna hafta buy Japanese, they're heavy into that "finesse" fishing.

Thank you......

Within my small collection of ultra lite rigs my favorite one is a St. Croix 7' Premier model PS 70ULF2 rod and I pair it with a vintage Garcia Mitchell 308 spinning reel. The gear ratio is not the greatest, but I find it a blast to use in open water for small to mid sized fish...mostly bass, perch, panfish and trout under 18".

I have a similar rig set up with their 4 piece "pack version" that breaks down for hiking. I think that one is a 6-1/2 footer and I use a Garcia Mitchell 408 on it, which has a better gear ratio for faster retrieves that I find handy when using it on small brushy streams.

Both rods are graphite.

People who know me have discovered that using old vintage tackle, especially reels and lures, is one of my childhood carry overs! I do use modern stuff too, and I just take turns with different rigs depending on what I am after.

The Okuma rod I recommend is a 2pc, 8’6” Celilo paired with a size 25 reel and you’re in business. The rod will cast light lures a long way.
They have shorter models available as well for about $40

Thank you OJ......good info.
