Now I have a torn rotator cuff in the left shoulder that can’t be fixed. No more casting with the left hand.

1) Since early May tI've been to 8 different locations, all excellent for fishing and caught no fish or ones so small they had to be released.
2) I've tried worms, different sized minnows and artificial lures. None have worked.
3) I've fished early morning and evening with zero results.
4) I've adjusted my bobber to different depths and my presentation of the bait.
5) I've talked to local bait shops and followed their suggestions with little to zero results.
6) My friend Bear bought a Fish Finder which apparently does everything but find fish.
7) I upgraded from 4lb test to 10lb test. Yesterday, something snapped my 10lb test line in about 3 seconds. (The drag was adjusted).
8.) I've fished up and down the shoreline at many locations with zero results.
9.)I've fished in cool and hot weather with no results.
10.)I haven't fished regularly in 40 years and just started two months ago which may prove I have no clue what I'm doing.

Despite the results, I do enjoy what goes with it.

Not every baseball player hit .325 or 40 home runs but they keep coming back.
The important thing is that you are enjoying yourself.

My first fish was at Indian River Inlet in Delaware. It seemed like it was like shooting fish in a barrel. Drop the line into the water and bingo there was a fish.

If I was teaching someone today I’d have them get a bucket full of cicadas or worms and have them catch bluegill all day. It builds confidence and is fun. Starting out going after bass can be tricky and not encouraging. Graduate to bass afterwards.

Do you ever drive your car around town or outside of town? Do you know how to use Google Earth. Finding places to fish is very easy.

how did you hook the cicadas on your hook, like you would hook a cricket, or what.

Yes, right through the body, try and get the hook through twice. Tried a couple without bobbers but they sink anyway and it’s hard to get any distance to the cast.

The mid-Atlantic is experiencing the visit of the X brood of the 17 year cicadas. They are dynamite to use as bait.
I pick enough for the day off of trees in my yard although they are readily available almost everywhere.
The first day I used them it was a feeding frenzy. Had a great sized blue Gill the second the bobber hit the water and after that there was catfish, bass, bluegill, and more bass.

I just got back from a two acre pond near my house and it wasn’t quite as active but I broke two lines with what appeared to be catfish.

If you have cicadas this year don’t pass up the opportunity.

I see a pond I'd like to fish. I go ask if it's ok for me to fish it. Frequently, the owner is hesitant. I simply tell them that they do not owe me an explanation. It is their pond. I also let them know that they DO NOT have to worry about me leaving any garbage at all and I will pick up any garbage I see. I will never fish there without checking in with them first. They almost always then agree to let me fish. Most of them do say that their biggest concern is that folks who have fished their pond before left bottles, cans and other garbage.

I don’t ask anyone unless there is a barbed wire fence and big No Trespassing signs. If you see water and it’s accessible then throw in a lure. I’ve fished all my life and have never been kicked out of anywhere.

They are kids. Long before an up grade is needed they are going to break the rod and or reel. For a kid, cheapest rod/reel combo you can find!

Agreed. Unless they live in your house your best intentions will result in three fishing trips a year. A $30 Zebco closed face rod and reel will suffice. The last thing you want is for them to get frustrated with tangles and screwups.

I was wondering if any states have reciprocal fishing rights as we do with drivers licenses? If I drive into Pennsylvania from Maryland Pennsylvania honors my right to drive in their state.

On the other hand I can’t fish in Pennsylvania with a Maryland fishing license. Would it make any sense to have reciprocal fishing rights?

Can anyone give me an idea if the shad run is underway yet? Especially in the area of Fletcher’s.

Vietnam. Special Services had about six rods available. I have no recollection what we used for bait but we did catch fish from the South China Sea.
