Penn Pursuit 3 4000. 50 bucks or so. I have a 4000, 5000 and an 8000. I’m kind of a fan.

I agree, lighter leader for most fresh water fishing. Some unique applications require stronger lines. We could what if all day about that.
Surf fishing is different. We don't use 9-15 foot rods to catch 9-15 foot fish. Most of the fish we catch a good quality 7 foot rod and 3000 to 5000 size reel would be just fine. The issue I had was casting my 9 foot rod with a 4 oz weight as hard as I could, sometime during my power cast the 20 pound leader snapped. I like to fish just past the breaking waves. That distance varies 50 to 150 yards or more here in Myrtle Beach. I read that shock leader should be 10#s of line for every oz of weigh. I'm trying 80# this season on my 12 footer casting a 8 oz weight on those days when you need the distance. I'll let you know how that works out.

I think your choice is spot on. I bought the Pursuit III Penn 7” combo from Dick’s for $109. I like it, stout but not cumbersome.

Bush lines are a stout cord tied to a tree limb, with enough line to put a hook into the water baited for catfish or carp, non-game fish. Similar to a trot line, but tied to a limb. I always called thema drop line. Keep fishing. DEEJAY

That sounds like a fresh water tactic. This rule is under saltwater rules.

If you are building a monster any Penn 10500 size reel will work.

I have no idea what “ ten bush or pole lines with single hooks or baits” means. I find three rods keep me busy surf fishing.

South Carolina Fresh water rules.

Nongame fish may be taken with any lawful nongame fishing device. Nongame fish may also be taken with hook and line. A fisherman may only use four rods and reels. A fisherman fishing from a boat may use an unlimited number of rods and reels if all persons in the boat 16 years and older have valid fishing licenses.

I bought a 10 footer. Love it, much easier to handle.

I use CVS Petroleum Jelly. I'm too cheap to buy Vaseline. I save money for more tackle.
