I caught my first big mouth bass in 1963 when I went camping with my aunt & uncle in a large ranch with small ponds with lily pads in central Florida where I grew up. I still remember it vividly and how excited I was. I used a bait casting outfit with a gold Johnson spoon with Creek Chub(frog pattern).I heard the scream of a Florida panther for the first time and had to be restrained in the tent. Man it was good to be a kid then !!!

Got that right! It’s a shame a lot of kids today don’t have the same opportunity that we did.

I remember the Oleo Margarine. It was a brand I saw in the store with others.

Thanks Huntm22! My memory must still be good My grandma bought Land O Lakes butter when I was a kid and I fell in love with the Indian maid on the package, now they have taken her off of the label, just breaks my heart!

Good information! A lot of our sickness can be attributed to our diets and the so called preservatives i.e. chemicals they put in our foods. When I was a kid in Louisiana back in the fourties it was called oleo, that may have went a brand name not sure.

Years ago I was stationed in the Finger Lakes area of NY. We fished Seneca Lake for Lake Trout using lead core line. Most people, including myself used hammered silver spoons, preferably with a single hook. We all caught our share with them. BTW, I did hook a few Rainbows with them.

You did good! My dad always said, the people let you fish there and the least you can do is try to keep it clean.

Sterba, you're so correct. I saw a lot of beautiful animals and scenery. Mountains, water falls, rivers, etc., but after seeing the beauty, I saw the ugliness of war. One time flying back to basecamp, I saw a pink elephant. A gosh to honest pink elephant. I told the pilots and they thought I had gone nuts. They turned around and there it was. In that part of the country the soil is red so when they bathe in the dirt they turn pink looking. It’s things most people never see. The down side is the enemy used elephants to move they’re equipment and supplies. Always beauty, always a down side.

Working hard for fishing. I still have the first musky lure I bought with the money I made caddying carrying doubles
for 18 holes. I wouldn't part with it for anything. Taught me if you really want something bad work a little harder for it.

I had my first rod, a Pflueger Akron reel and 2 lures a Lucky 13 and Crazy Crawler I bought when I was 9 years old, we had a fire about 8 years ago and lost them. It wasn't the end of the world but I worked my butt off earning the money to buy them. Kids today don't appreciate what it's really like to do that.

Wish I could do that but by this time of year here most farm ponds are dry as a bone.

Hacksaw, it’s amazing the beauty you can see even in what we often refer to as God forsaken places!
