It was a beautifully bright sunny day in Northern Michigan, with a spectacular blue sky to compliment the windy conditions. My "co-pilot" says..."let's get out for an afternoon drive and point the car to the West". That tells me she wants to visit Frankfort, MI....so we can observe the giant waves crashing on the shoreline beach head and adjacent seawalls.
So, off we go, like two underground moles that have just crept out of a coal mine of hibernation from a week of classic gloomy overcast weather. I was squinting so hard that I had to remember what to do next. Oh yeah, that is what sunglasses are for!
We reach our favorite destination in just under an hour...the Elberta, MI overlook that provides a panoramic view of the North/South coast line and features Frankfort harbor right smack dab in the middle. The causeway and seawalls are about 12 feet wide, and under normal conditions you can stroll out there with a fishing rod and try your luck at whatever the seasonal fish runs are...or be content with smallmouth bass, suckers, carp, catfish and the occasional panfish that live in the harbor itself. I knew there would be no fishing on today's journey, so I left all the gear back home. Today was all about catching some "rays" and recharging our pale skin with a fresh supply of vitamin D!
When we pulled into the small parking lot to capture views of the Lake, my wife could not help but notice a large military truck occupying a couple of spaces in the corner. "Park right next to that rig...I want to be right next to it!" There are a handful of restoration enthusiasts in our region that like to fix up these surplus vehicles, and this guy definitely went "all out" to make his truck a real eye catcher...right down to the small lettered message stencils about where to step, where not to grab hold and how much petrol to pump in to reach the "fill line" on the diesel tank. We were very impressed, and enjoyed spending about 20 minutes taking in the views of the water...as well as the magnificent paint job and other attention to fine details on the truck.
We wanted to be back home before dark, so it was already time to mosey on over to the City of Frankfort proper to get a worms eye view of the bay. There was a pair of resident bald eagles wafting overhead and we enjoyed a brief show as they swooped from side to side across the wide points in the Betsie River like a pair of teenage kite boarders. After observing the action from the other side of the community it was time to roll on up the road to the town of Empire for a final peek at Lake Michigan before turning East to Traverse City.
We were both wearing a big smile as the car eased back into our garage and we stepped out just in time to see the glow of sundown on the Western horizon.

Thanks for the pics fishyaker as well as your eloquent description of your trip! You definately have a gift for writing. My wife and I spent a long weekend in a lake house built back in the dunes a little south of point Bettie a few years ago with friends who summer in Michigan. Itβs a magical place!π
