This is a saltwater stripper. The Chesapeake Bay is an area where the Atlantic strippers spawn. Most of the year, large fish are off limits, but we have 2 week spring trophy season where we may keep these large fish. This year we have a slot limit between 19 to 28 inches, with one between 28 to 36 inches and a closed season from mid December thru April and a 2 week period in July. Usually all large fish are released after being photographed, but Charter Boats will keep all the legal fish that they are allowed to catch to divide among their customers. This 'BIG ROCKFISH' photograph is of a fish that was caught on a charter boat on a cool spring day in the Maryland waters of the Chesapeake Bay.

Striped Bass can tolerate both fresh and salt water, the bass spawn in the early spring March & April and will come from the Atlantic Ocean into Chesapeake Bay, Potomac River and tributaries in Maryland and move into various rivers to do their thing. Where they hatch are feash water.
