I bought some ice fishing braid last year for the first time and am happy with it. As for regular braid, you won't like it for ice fishing. It will freeze and become as stiff as ice. Been there, done that. I was skeptical of the ice braid because of that. However, it didn't freeze and didn't get stiff! In fact, we lost 4 walleye on that trip due to using mono on the tip-ups. The line would get cut on the edge of the hole. But the ice line didn't care about the sharp ice at the bottom of the hole. It reeled in a 29 incher with no problem. It really saved the trip for us. I'm hooked on it now! One thing to remember, you normally don't have to set the hook. It has no stretch and so the fish hook themselves. In fact, more often than not you will pull the hook right out if you give it a yank to set it.

Some of us could care less about tough, old trophy deer. I like those racks. They are very unique.

Welcome Tbradley! I think the reason you were asked if it was roadkill is due to the broken front leg. I would say you did that deer a favor and saved it from a lot of extra suffering. Good looking kids and pics. Great job of teaching them how to hunt and fish. How did that turtle taste?

Guys that's bound to happen sometimes but by and large the circle hook is the best hook for catch and release in my opinion. No hook is able to only catch a fish by the mouth every time. If used properly circle hooks WILL most often hook the fish in the corner of the mouth. The last I knew Florida also required circle hooks for saltwater fishing. I'm not sure about freshwater.

You took the words righr out of my mouth! 100% agree. Just start reeling when you feel the bite and keep the rod tip up and the line tight. ANY slack and the fish is gone. But it's an excellent hook for catch and release. Once the fish is in the net the hook usually falls right out.

Hello River-Dan. I have been to Port Charlotte and Boca Grande. Great fishing. I haven't been there for 20+ years but know the fishing is still great at Boca Grande. I fish mostly from Saginaw Bay near Charity Islands to Rockport. I just can't seem to ever get enough of it.

Been to the Upper and Lower Falls. They are both beautiful. You can really feel the power of the Upper Falls when you get near them. The U.P. has some great fishing as well for sure. Thanks for the pics!

Fishyaker, are you talking about Ron Finch? I knew a Ron Finch from Oakland county that built custom motorcycles as well as artwork. I see him in Youtube as well. Just curious.

There are countless videos on Youtube for both fish decoy carving and pike spearing in a shanty.

Lol. I guess maybe we only do this in Michigan! Honestly, I would be willing to bet that most states have at least a show or two each year but they tend to not be heavily advertised. Anyone wanting to check out one of these shows should be able to do a simple search online and find the datesand times as well as the locations. Nice pictures!

Lakers are biting great off Alpena and Rockport. Walleye fishing is picking up off Alpena also.

I say go for it but buy a spinning rod and reel as well. Some situations are better suited to spinning gear than fly gear. However, there is nothing like feeling that fish on the end of your line while fly fishing. Learning to fly fish can be as easy or as hard as you want to make it. A simple straight forward cast will work just fine. Don't waste time trying barrel rolls, etc. I doubt you have time to learn that. I've been fly fishing off and on for over 45 years and still don't bother with fancy cats. They look cool but the fish don't seem to be as impressed as the fisherman. Lol. I do just fine keeping it simple. The fish don't seem to mind. Good luck and take some pictures if you can.
