While camping in Denton Co TX, crappie fishing and hoping for some sandies, this beast took my jig and gave me an epic battle. Not wanting to be landed, it sctually went upstream in the lake spillway that was wide open! Amazing the strength of this beast. It also swam behind the concrete chute on the far side of the current. Then it made a run downstream just ripping drag. I was able to keep its head up and guide it to the eddy pool on my side where another fisher landed it.
I properly thanked him and the fella that coached me thru the entire battle including where to cast for the big crappie by offering the fish to them. They both declined. There was no scale available but the concensus of all fishers there is that its bigger than the 35 pounders that have come outta the same spot.

I've been reading a lot of forum questions lately that refer to the middle of the day being lousy for fishing. That prompted me to try something this afternoon just for the fun of it. I traveled to a small local lake that I have never bothered to fish, and kayaked around the circumference between high noon and 3 pm today. The lake is about 1/2 mile long and 1/4 mile wide, with a good number of coves. Some folks might call it a large pond. The deepest area I trolled over was pushing 40 feet, and I suspect that there could be places that reach 60 out near the center. Not much in the way of bottom structure, but plenty of lily pads! Weather forecast was calling for more storms all day, but the radar looked clear enough to go for it during this window of opportunity. The public launch is only a half hours pedal or paddle from anywhere on the lake so although I felt pretty safe....I kept a constant eye on the sky nevertheless.

We had a severe storm pass over last night, so I suspected that things might be pretty lackluster today.

Much to my surprise, the crappie and largemouth bass ended up being fairly cooperative once I tried enough lure colors and styles. Best producer for the crappie was a small pink jig with white marabou and chenille body wraps in 15' of water near the end of an old fallen tree. Other "good" colors were ignored. Thank goodness for a fish locator on the kayak, as I may not have come upon this small school of crappie that produced several nice customers. They were best taken while jigging with a short ultra-lite rod set up.

The bass were excited over a couple of Rapala shallow diving crank baits in natural crayfish and "creamy clown" (chartreuse top, red head and ivory bottom) colors. A Mepps spinner in the "white" Black Fury pattern with a Mr. Twister white grub tail also produced on the bass (size #3). Almost every bass was taken while casting or jigging. Nothing at all while trolling, which came as no surprise today on the path I chose to run closer to shore. I brought along a second, larger rod for targeting the bass.

This was a nice body of water and I plan to return once more this Summer to only target a meal of the crappie. Today was catch and release as an experiment in afternoon fish temperament.

Nice work Fishyaker. Sound plan produced sound results! I like your future plan as well!

Son in law and cousin caught a couple nice ones in Bodega July 3rd. Both different boats and spots Bodega Head and Arch Rock. Guess whats for dinner. Happy 4th

Nice fish! we were out that day but stopped just short of Bodega Bay because its a long haul from Berkeley. Guess we should’ve sucked it up and continued north! May I ask what your set up was? Flasher, depth, down rigger? I assume frozen anchovies. Understand if you prefer not to share.

Got out this morning after the rain died. 58°air, 71°-74°water. Not much happening below the dam, water is colder up there. Got a couple little smallies around mid-lake, then headed to the south end where the waters warmer. Lot's of empty beds in the shallows, must be through spawning. Tried a bunch of spots shallow and deep but never did find the big girls, Largemouth or Smallmouth. Wound up catching 6 total, before the Pleasure boaters got out of control.

Looks good to me Fred, you persisted and figured it out under sub nominal conditions, nice work!

Great story to chronicle your pursuit of the salmon! A nice way to rebound on that idea and instead go for something else that turned out to be a good catch with impressive alternate scenery along the way!

Thanks Fishyaker, Just gotta be flexible sometimes!

I didnt know they went that far north (sunfish)

I’ve seen large schools of them before (several years ago) when sailing from the bay down to Catalina Island. They were offshore of Monterey Bay, some as large as coffee tables, just huge. Must’ve been several hundred of them of all sizes just sunning themselves on the surface as we sailed by, pretty awesome.

Thanks Jarhead, you’ve got a nice boat (looked up pics of one), my buddie’s is an open bow type with a center helm, I’ll get the make on the next trip and post it. It’s seaworthy, but wouldn’t want to be in heavy seas with it just from a sheer comfort standpoint.

Went out with my fishing buddies to try for some Salmon. Headed out from Berkeley a little late (8:00am) and headed out to Duxbury reef area. ALOT of boats trolling so we got our lines in and trolled for an hour or so and spent most of the time un-fouling our lines from the abundant jelly fish. Decided to head further north and got up to point Reyes and determined that another 45 minutes of motoring in a 23 ft boat plus the motoring back was just too much and too late. Switched up to rock fish and stopped at a few spots on the way back, hit and miss until a spot off Duxbury reef (where we started). All the boats were gone and found a spot were the rockies were. Spent a few hours there and then back in. All in all a very long and tiring day speed bouncing across the water from point to point, feel like I was digging ditches all day. We got a mess of rock fish and 1 nice Lingcod. Might try our luck next week for the Salmon if the ocean conditions are right.

Our catch for the day

29” 8 lb Lingcod, good fight from 90 feet!

Mola Mola/Sunfish, about 2’ in dia. Also had a nice whale show, but no pics…….
