there are many good fishing areas on the peninsula. I have fished the Kenai and Kasilof rivers for trout and Dolly Varden as well as salmon. the Russian is also good. S There are many stocked lakes to chose from but be aware of limits both for size and number. The Alaska Department of fish and game has a book showing the stocked lakes on the Kenai Peninsula. I think this link will get you to it...https://www.adfg.alaska.gov/Static-sf/Region2/pdfpubs/KenaiStocked_sm.pdf

Good Luck. I wish I was there now.
Doug

I love Alaska but only visited, never fished. I met a guy who went several times to Alaska to fish for Northern Pike. He said they were large and in a shallow water river. He caught many every time he went. It sounds too good to be true. I don't know anything about fishing in Alaska. If you go on your trip Forest I'd like to hear about it.

Went to Soldotna the year hurricane Katrina hit. My group of eight included two - a good friend and myself - from the Mobile Gulf Coast. Katrina was still out in the Atlantic and not much of a storm when we left, but got stronger and closer to the coast daily after we left for Alaska.

New Orleans took the brunt of the storm, but Mobile got rocked pretty well. We returned home the day the storm hit. Couldn’t fly into Mobile so Montgomery was as close as we could get. Rented a car and drove down I-65 all by ourselves. The storm was raging when we got to Mobile with traffic lights down and debris strewn all around. A tree blew down across my driveway just as we drove up to my house. My wife was fit to be tied.

Since late August, September and October are the prime months for hurricanes I had to promise my wife not to take an out of state fishing trip after August 15. I have held to that promise, keeping the peace.

Anyway, the fishing is really good around Soldotna. We caught halibut (I landed a 137 pounder), several types of salmon and trout in the Kenai River. The outfitter’s name was Chick - don’t recall the name of his company - and he worked out of the bar (can’t remember the name of bar either) he owned. We met every evening at the bar to meet our guide for the next day and tell fishing stories over a beer or two. Don’t recall the house buying any of those beers either.

Just remember that the Salmon fishing on the Kenai during the run is elbow to elbow fishermen with many interlopers (grizzly bears). I have seen this myself so it is true. If you want this I won't try to dissuade you, but I would never fish under those circumstances. Going out on the sound for halibut might be a great experience.

Forestfisher, I was there in June of this year fishing for Sockeyes. It was the “combat” style fishing. First time for me doing that style of fishing and wasn’t “mentally” prepared, kind of spoiled it for me. With that said, we as a group of 6 did well and caught our share of fish. We also did a one day halibut charter, although that’s not cheap it was very fun and productive. I did day to day postings of my trip in June here on the stage. Check it out as there’s more details and pics. Ask me anything specific you want to know and I’ll try and oblige.

The drift boat fishing is exciting. I did a fly in trip with High Adventure Air and had a blast. I think it was wolverine Creek. the fishing was phenomenal. I also did a guide on the Kenai river as well as flossing for salmon. We stayed at ORCA lodge. We fished for Halibut out of Ninilchick. the fishing was great but getting the boat in and out of the water was an event in itself. I've never had a boat launced wiht a large 4 wheel drive tractor before nor have I took a wide open throttle run at the trailer. I like the fishing but will never forget the boat launch and retrieval. when you have a bit check out u tube for boat launches at Ninilchick AK deep creek marina.
