I've only ever used spinning reels but really want to try a baitcasting reel. I'm mainly fishing for large mouth and trout where I'm from in NJ.

Question: Any recommendations for someone starting out with a baitcaster? Don't want to break the bank especially if it turns out not to be my favorite.

An abu garcia black max or a lews American hero, i have never used a lews reel but heard they are great, i use a black max and it is pretty nice, the abu garcia silver max is really good too but you need to look at them and compare

Lew’s and Abu Garcia low profile baitcasters are both made by Doyo, a Korean company that make reels. So Abu and Lew’s are pretty much the same.

I don't fish baitcasters so take this with a grain of salt. I've heard some say the black max is nice to start with but has issues with use. If you do get a baitcaster practice in the yard until you get the hang of it, cause your gonna have to overcome some bird nests in the learning curve.
