Do they really work and if so, what size, colors, ect are the best. I would think if they go down deep, they wouldn't glow anyway!!! Please advise!! Fact or Fiction??? LOL

Welcome to the stage.

Glow works at any depth. I've painted acrylic glow paint on small styrofoam balls and did the best with pink. The acrylic paint doesn't glow too bright but it still works. It is especially good earyl in the morning or late in the eveining.

Sometimes I wonder if too bright a glow might not scare away some fish.

I have yellow, green, orange, red and pink balls. Hobby Lobby is one source for 1" styrofoam balls. After painting them I coat them in clear epoxy and rotate them for a day.

Good luck.

I tie some of my jigs with glow in the dark eyes, I can't say they work much better but I fished with a friend a few weeks ago. We both used the same lure, a jig, his without the glow eyes and I caught two to his one. Think I had 10 he had 5 so something worked. made a believer out of him now every time we go he digs through my jig box and finds one with the glow in dark eyes. As long as you hold a light on it for a few seconds the eyes glow under water.

I have some glow in the dark lures most I’ve never even used, but one, a topwater, I used once and got a strike but no hook set, that’s all I know about how well they work

Help me out here- how are you using these styrofoam balls? I can’t visualize the setup. Stringing then ahead of your lure? Bill

good question. I have used flashers with small led lights, lures with glow and some with UV and some with both. all work better at times but not always. I think alot depends on water depth, and clarity, as well as sky lighting such as cloud cover, time of day and of course the fish's preference that day. often the placebo effect also is at play if a fisherman thinks it will work they fish with it more often and longer and as a result catch more fish.

Reading this post about glow paint made me remember something I had forgot when I was in New Zealand for a couple of months fishing for trout, I went out on a couple of lakes with the guide fly fishing. He made his own flies called them glow bugs, he made him out of yarn that glowed if I remember right pink was the basic color. we would fish them anywhere from 10 to 20 feet deep and the smallest trout that I caught was about 30 inches I wished I could find the pictures I would post them. I think I'm gonna go out in my shop and see if I can find some and try them in the kelp beds here offshore and see if they'll work for bass.. When I said 30 inches I meant that was the smallest trout that we caught the whole trip. I know there had to be smaller ones around we never saw him I heard the fishing was great in New Zealand and it is something to remember. it's a once in a lifetime fishing trip. The smoked mussel chowder is probably the best you'll ever find. fish and chips you couldn't beat him. but whatever you do don't buy a beef steak their steaks are the worst steaks in the world and if you're a coffee hound like me it is very expensive $4 for a cup of flat white, refills are excellent they're $4 to. I was very fortunate and met another fella that commercially fished he took us out on his commercial fishing boat 60-70 miles out and we fish for snapper. for me that was probably better then sea bass or halibut. When we got back in that evening the Navy was waiting for him because he didn't file his papers to go out and take us fishing. You might think that New Zealand is a free island but it's really not not like we are here in the states. It is socialism the land of no pest. They drop 1080 poison all through their forests by helicopter to kill the possum and the rat and the slugs. All in all it was a very expensive trip and one I will never forget, will I go back there yes,

Yes they work. A True Glow Lure produces it own glow, so depth really doesn't affect it. A UV Glow Lure does not. It depends on UV Light to produce the glow effect. But UV Light can penetrate to pretty good depths, during the day, in clear water. The True Glow Lure needs to have it's glow replenished periodically, with a bright light, to produce it's best glow potential. Some of the newer Glow Paints will last quite a long time between refreshment "light ups". I would also recommend some sort of Human Oder Hiding Scent on the lure after handling the lure on each light replenishment. I've found Pure Anise Oil works well for that when casting at night for Chinook Salmon. Both from shore, and from a boat, off the mouths of rivers and creeks the Salmon will run up in the fall. I have had great results using 3/4 oz. KO Wobblers when casting at night. Either in the Factory Glow Finish, or with Witchcraft Glow Tape, cut to the shape of the lure applied. Have fun, and Good Luck!!

I have heard that if you put scent in the surface of a uv lure it will negate the uv properties of the lure so it is best just to put it on the end. have you heard that as well?

I was referring to to True Glow In The Dark Lures. I know for a fact that Scents do not affect the Glow Quality of those types of lures, at least not Pure Anise Oil. I've never really used UV Glow Lures that much. So, I really can't tell you if that's true or not. It seems to make sense though, as Scents are often Oil Based, both Liquid and Gel types. They may well block the UV Light from penetrating to the lure. Perhaps, a water based scent would not cause that problem. The trouble with a water based scent is, it washes off the lure after several casts, and has to be reapplied more often. I have a UV Light, I'll have to dig out one of the very few UV Glow Lures I do have, and run a test on them to see if that is true. I'll try to get back to you on that, if I can find them among the several thousand lures I have. Have not seen them for awhile. Thanks for the question, and for giving me something to do while I not out fishing. Good luck to you, and have fun fishing.
