Went fishing with a friend in the Humboldt Bay to target California Halibut. Got one limit of two fish and lost the biggest CaliHali I've ever seen. We were using jacksmelt that we jigged for by the boat ramp. Caught a couple big ones over 5 inches. He put one on his hook and hooked a huge halibut. Had to have been over 45 inches. Monster! He brought it up and I grabbed the net. He brought in close for me to net but I'm short and have short arms and I couldn't reach out far enough. We attempted that twice and I couldn't net it. The fish takes a run and as he reeling it back up it breaks loose. I felt really bad but I couldn't reach it far enough to net it. And it was almost as big as the net opening. Then he says "why didn't he use the gaff" that was the big one that got away. There are huge California Halibut out there. If you happen to hook one "gaff it!" Here is a picture of my friend Travis and the halibut he caught. He was also very kind and gave me the 30 inch one he caught. Thank you Travis.

Iโ€™ve caught many halibut jigging for both bait and halibut fishing off off many piers in the bay was just asking a question from a fellow stager!

Used sabiki jig and a throw net at the marina docks to get the jacksmelt to use as live bait.

Never a stupid question when it's about fishing. Never.

Been there done that in Humboldt, l could not catch any bait last time to the bay and they would not touch frozen bait except for the leopards and one bat ray, which did not taste as good as I have been told.
But that's finished for me, had to sell the boat and my partner and best friend is on hospice in Loleta.
Tight line my friend and I look forward to hearing your reports.
