Have two 7 foot rods MH and have 4,000 reels on them and the balance is just right

It’s like a big catfish rod, I think the foot on a 4000 is slightly less than that of a 5000, I think the 5000 would fit better, that’s what I’m thinking anyway

If I were just targeting bass like in the photos using up to 4 oz wt., I would use 2000 with 20 to 40 pound braid depending on how much junk is in the water.. That will cut your effort in half. Of course, I am old, so effort and enjoyment go in the same sentence. Again the rod makes the difference. With a 4 oz. weight a med/heavy rod would be my go to with a fast tip. or med/fast tip.
the bass in the photo were caught on a medium with a 3000 reel, no problem there, average to small fish,
But with the rod I’m inquiring about I’m looking to catch stripers 8 lbs and up, 8 pounds being the biggest I’ve ever caught, probably only using 1 or 2 ounce weights but wanting the full 4 ounces available

Thank you everyone for your advice, I think I’ll look forward to a 5000 because of the foot of the reel being slightly bigger than the 4000, I think it will fit that rod better, I’m looking for what I can ask mrs clause for Christmas

Ok, an 8ft spinning rod, medium heavy, made to handle lures from 1 to 4 ounces,
What size reel would you match it with?
A 5000 or a 6000?

To me it depends on the fish you are going to target. Larger hard fighting fish I think I would choose the Penn Slammer IV 5500 series or the Penn Clash 4000 series if you are targeting something a little smaller.

Yes, larger fish, not that I’m good at it yet but that’s what I want to work up to

The biggest reel I own for surf is a Penn 5000. That handled 30+ poind stripers, blues up to 15# and red drum up to 48 inches.

The suggestion of the Shimano 4000 sounds about right to me.....they are smooth and sturdy reels. Tight lines.....print photos......

True question after reading all the responses. I am not being sarcastic or confrontational. Why such large reels for the targeted fish? I think of 5000+ spinning reels for big game and surf fishing very large heavy spoons?

It’s a big rod I want to target big stripes and also might want to use some say 11 inch spoons
I don’t feel you are sarcastic or confrontational and I appreciate your honesty

If I were fishing fresh water an 8 foot 1 to 4 would be big. My BIG rod for stripers from g he. Each is 11 feet long and throws 6 to 16 ounces. And I still use a 5000 level penn. It's all perspective.
