I was one of the first sport fishermen in my region to use them , a local LL friend said that’s all they ever used sword and tuna fishing offshore ! This was in the mid sixties , they immediately improved my tarpon fishing hookups by 50 % ! Using live bait !

I use them for live bait in Florida. The fishing regs require you to use only circle hooks when using live bait on the bay side of the keys even if you are using a jig. All bait shops in the keys sell lead head jigs with circle hooks. They work just as well.

I've heard of them but have never tried them. Are they good for Jig fishing Walleye? I've heard that circle hooks basicly set themselves and am wondering if jerking the rod to "set the hook" would be counterproductive. Also, if I go with a circle hook, what size would you recommend? I fish walleye in summer only when I'm visiting a good friend in the Boulder Junction area in NE Wisconsin.

Actually they do work with jigs and other lures as well, but the key is never "set" the hook. That will simply slide the hook out of their mouth. When you get a hit on a lure or jig, you have to really stop the urge to jerk back on the rod. Instead simply start reeling as if nothing happened. That allows the circle hook to slide out of the mouth but catch on the lip of the fish. When a fish hits a lure and turns it will hook itself as long as you don't "interfere".😀 Cheers

Well, I just might haft to try that sometime. It would definitely take some gittin use to after all these years of settin the hook when you get a bite.

Yes, it requires focus, and remembering whether you're using a J hook or Circle! You may not catch as many fish with the circle, but you won't be gill/gut hooking them either if you want to release undersized fish unharmed.
An FYI. Places that sell circle hook jigs.

Hahaha!

Wow I didn’t know that either. I haven’t seen any circle hooks in northeastern Ohio but in Florida I have used them. Was fishing with my 6 year old grandson. He kept reeling in fish after fish. I was getting skunked. I watched him. He reeled in slow and never set a hook with the rod tip. I followed his lead and I started catching. Now I understand why. Thanks guys for sharing

Here is a circle hook in action - it's where the bunker chunk is at the corner of the shark's jaw.
