Hi, looking for some bluegill or sunfish in the southeastern plains of Colorado, somewhere in the Rocky Ford/La Junta/Lamar areas. I plan to look for cats on public lands on the Arkansas, and hope to get some bait with either fly rod or cast net, maybe from some of the ponds on State Wildlife Areas, but am having difficulty getting info on where to go for the gills/sunnies. Thanks!

Here in the midwest they're a dime a dozen but can't help you out there. Somebody might come along to help you out. Welcome to the stage.

All I could offer is check out Parks and Wildlife website…. or local tackle/bait shops

Try downloading the Fishing Atlas fron Dept of Wildlife. It list (with map/directions) of all the lakes and what species.

I don't think you can use a cast net to catch blue gill in CO. Think you can use it to catch shad though.

Good luck and Tight Lines

Hello!
Most all of the reservoirs in the southern half of Colorado will have bluegill, green sunfish and perch, as well as 2 or 3 species of catfish. John Martin is the park that comes to mind first. Some places do have regulations or size limits for each species, so grab a Parks and Wildlife guidebook to be safe. Otherwise, you shouldn't have any problems finding what you are looking for in southern Colorado. Good luck!
