What bait or lure do I use for these guys. I’m headed up to NY in a couple days and my heads spinning trying to do research on what’s a good bait/lure for them. I will only be fishing off piers.

So you can't even target them out and catch and release out of season?

Here in California we use all kinds of lures and whatever small (under like 4 inch) live bait. Striper tend to like squid.

Lures would include mostly like 1/4-1oz - I use 3/4 oz - with 4 inch swimbaits. I usually use white but i hear blue, red, and brown all work well.

Striper are one of those fish - from piers and from surf, that you might get a bit every once in a while. I go out for striper a ton and catch other fish instead much more often than I do striper.

As was already stated, the striper migration is now well south of NY. I'm sure there are schoolies (juveniles) around which will hit paddle tails and SP Minnow lures. Of course it's all catch & release so swap out the treble hooks for single hooks and crimp the barbs to minimize injury to the fish.

Around Sacramento - the Sacramento and the Feather Rivers. Full of shakers year round and big mamas run up to spawn in the early spring.

I fish for Striper over in New Jersey. When we use bait
it's usually clams, crabs or live eels not necessarily in
that order. Even if you catch them and let them go it
would be O.K.. Up this way the water is too cold and
they have gone South.

You won’t find many strippers in The Northeast At this time of the year and those that you do find will be s schoolies and must be released. For shore fishing about all that is In season is scup and eel. Black Sea bass for another couple of weeks . Please use circle hooks and lures if you do go marine fishing to give the released fish the best chance. If you want to catch something you are probably better to charter a boat for bluefish, cod or haddock. The first two you have the best shot at.
