Went carping in 83 degree Colonial Lake near the aerator this evening on a hot, humid, sunny day with a light south wind. Threw out a can of corn 🌽 for chum, then caught 20 bluegills, 4 golden shiners, a 13.75” brown bullhead, a painted turtle 🐒 and a musk turtle. The bluegills were hitting a #14 gold treble hook on 2 lb test line with no bait. Had lots of action with corn bait. Landed 44 turtles this year. Caught my 2,000th NJ fresh water fish 🐟 for this year.

That’s a gang of fish bands and a nice fat good-sized bullhead.

Another fine day on the water NJ219! You are really racking up the catches! That's a lot of fish being caught...and turtles too!

I was talking to a fellow fly fisherman last night after the bug hatch was over that was out with his son fishing about a half mile from where I was at, and he got bumped in the leg, freaked out and fell over midstream...filling his waders. His son was a short distance away, flipped on his headlamp, and saw a "huge" snapping turtle swim by. According to his version of the story, it was "monstrous"!

I have seen them in the river quite often (big enough to feed a family of ten with turtle soup), but thankfully have not yet had an encounter like that! It's one thing in daylight...but at night, in the dark, I think I'd wet my waders from the inside first before tipping over!

Flyfisher,
What are the evening hatches that are coming off? What times?

Bob

Good afternoon! Before the giant "hexagenia" mayflies come off (starting at around 10 pm), there is a brief hatch of mahogany drakes that start about a half hour prior. I am on the Boardman River in Traverse City, MI. After that it's all about mousing until you want to head home!

This is a long shot...but did we fish together on the upper Manistee a few years ago during the hex hatch?! Your name and location seem familiar to me!
