Angler Arrested for Shooting Near Boaters too Close to His Lines
By Wired2Fish Editors

On Thursday, June 8, 2023, police responded to a 911 call on Crane Prairie Reservoir southwest of Bend, Oregon. Callers reported being allegedly shot at by a fisherman on the bank who, along with a few others, hollered at them for being to close their fishing lines One of the fishermen, then went into a tent and returned with a shotgun that he allegedly shot over the heads or in the general direction of the boaters to warn them off.

According to documents filed Friday, June 9, 2023, Nicholas Clifford Ervin Fetters of Bend, Oregon has been accused by the Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office of the unlawful use of a weapon as well as recklessly endangering a person, menacing and disorderly conduct. The documents were filed in Deschutes County Circuit Court.

When the deputies arrived on scene, the launched a drone to assess the situation. They flew a drone over campers along the bank. Fetters then allegedly shot at the drone twice. After that, deputies moved in and placed Fetters under arrest. If Fetters is found guilty of his three felony counts of the unlawful use of a weapon, he would be stripped of his right to own a firearm.

Well, he was using the wrong weapon. Should have been .30-06, which would have made a much more threatening noise and have longer reach! Just Sayin...RJS

As much as I hate to disclose this, I and several buddies are guilty of the same act. This took place when we were just teenagers and on Red River.

There were some duck hunters from Oklahoma who had their decoys in some shallow water near the shore on the Oklahoma side. Our side was a steep rocky side with a jungle of brush, rocks and such. Me and two or three buddies had driven down to the river and happened to be almost directly across the river from where their decoys were.

Now, we knew better, but just for the devil of it, we were well concealed by the rocks and trees. Also, we were not firing directly at them, but at, or over their decoys with a .22 rifle. To say this upset the duck hunters is an understatement. There really was no way they could detect where we were or were shooting from. It was such that our .22 bullets would hit near or over their decoys. They they would holler, and even fire their shotgun in the air warning us to stop. Of course, we didn't, for a period of time until we got bored with our prank.

So, if you are from Oklahoma and had this happen to you on Red River, you have our apologies! Just Sayin...RJS

Shooting at a drone is illegal based on federal laws, even if it is within private property. It is also illegal to throw anything at the drone in an attempt to knock it out of the sky. When this happens, it is imperative to inform your local law enforcement and local FAA Flight Standards Office (FSDO). He's lucky they don't seem to be charging him on a Federal level.

Sure seems I otta have a right to shoot down a drone over my property spying on me. What if it is the bad guys?

Kerry Hansen: I believe this could be a grey zone, if the mob wanted to fly a drone over your property, scoping you out for some illegal activity, I don't think they would want to run to the police and complain. However, the consequences might be worse. I couldn't speculate on that. Just Sayin...RJS

Not sure I would tell that story. Poor judgment at any age. Weapons are not toys.
