Heading to Mammoth Thursday. Any advice for bank fishing the area? I’ve never fished Lake Mary or Convict , usually fish the June Lake loop but not sure of shore accessibility
due to the snow.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Try calling Ricks sports center in mammoth. 760 934 3426 maybe they can give you answers on access and lures or bait. I fished the June lake and mammoth areas in the 60s & 70s mostly by boat and caught rainbows on silver super dupers and Pautskes balls of fire salmon eggs. Lately I’ve been fishing the Kern river at Kernville attending car shows and gold panther Martin spinners worked best and Pautskes balls of fire eggs on the planted rainbows. I fished Crowley in the 60s using night crawlers fly lining them with a spinning reel from a rental boat. Good luck I love it up there.

Convict has no snow, clear roads and banks. Not sure where the good spots are tho. I had a 'slow day' up there last week, but it was saturated with people. Might have better luck now without the holiday.

Go to Lake George early in the morning to snag a parking space. . from there go to your left and there will be ample shoreline in front of the campground. My favorite spot is to continue left towards the back side and cross the stream inlet.
Once you’re there immediately you see shoreline where you can fish with. Berkeley power worms or mouse tails on a Carolina sliding sinker rig with a 24” leader. You can come in the evening and toss spinners before the sun goes down.
Good Luck!

Mammoth Lakes is a fishing Paradise!! I love it there. Above the town you have Lake Mary, Lake George, Twin Lakes and Lake Mammie. All are good for bank fishing. Rainbows, Browns, and some small Brookies. Mammie is smaller and clearer and you can often see feeding fish. I have had great success casting unweighted night crawlers to the feeders. From the bank, power bait or inflated crawler with a sliding egg sinker about 2 feet above the bottom. This technique I use at all 4 lakes. I will also cast a small spinner with 4lb test line as the water is clear and they spook easily. Same with Twin. Larger lures like Thomas Boyant red and gold for the 2 larger lakes. For bank fishing, get there early to get the good spots where casting is unincumbered by low hanging branches and it's flat enough to set up a chair if you are sitting. On Twin, you can rent a row boat and can also see fish feeding. They used to rent motor boats on George. If they still do, that is a magnificent trolling lake and georgeous. I troll with weight to get down to 15 or 20 ft deep. Flashers can help with the weight. Flashers with crawler or lure. Without flashers cast out and let is sink way down then troll slowly stopping and going as the lure rises up the water colume. If you walk around the lake casting as you go, I recommend George. For Golden Trout, there is a short trail from Lake George to Crystal Lake. I catch Goldens with small spinners and light line. Truely a fishermans Paradise.

I was just there this past week. They still have lake Mary road closed at twin lakes. So you have to hike if you want to get to the upper lakes. (I didn't)
Fished twin lakes with a water bobber and flies off a spinning reel, had a great time pulling out decent size brookies and rainbows. Power bait seemed to not be working, but was probably because it's being fished pretty hard with the summer crowd and no upper lakes to drive to. I heard night crawlers were doing good, too.

Thanks for the tips everybody. I am heading up in a couple of weeks. We are staying near Lake Mamie so I will probably do a lot of shore fishing there. Also renting a pontoon for a day on June Lake. I had an awesome experience at Gull Lake a few years ago but the fish were so big the line snapped. (I was out of practice.) Will report on my findings.
