My grandson and I are going to be at mille lac the first week of June. Has anyone fished there? Any recommendations? We will have a boat all week. Coming from So Cal and Texas. We will be targeting smallmouth bass and pike. Thanks!
Most people go there to fish walleye. Nevertheless, the lake has huge pike, big smallmouth and giant muskie.
The thing is, it is very easy to get blown off the lake. When I went up there I was prepared to drive around the lake to find the most sheltered side if it was windy.
I never caught a musky there and I tried a few times.
It has been a few years since I was there, but I will show you the best places I know on the Navionics chart viewer.
For smallmouth I fished the SE corner along the reefs and buoys on the east side of the lake.
Here is the map reference:

Here is the map reference for Cove and Wahkon Bays:

There are many rocks in these areas. Be careful.
Note special regs on walleyes are STRICTLY enforced and they can change. They probably do not allow any night fishing as well.
Those were my best areas. Please report back on your success.

Most fishermen in MN have neen on Mille Lacs lake, I would advise someone in your situation hire a guide or take out a launch. There are many. Good luck.
Yes we are hiring a guide the first day.
I'd suggest a quality guide like Mark Schutz. He's a great guy and a excellent guide. You won't go wrong with him. Check him out as early as possible because his opponent calendar fills up quickly. Good luck.
Thank you. Hired a guide when I booked in October. Tim Ajax works with fisherman's resort on mille lac
You will find the Smallmouth fishing WORLD CLASS!
You will be in good hands with a guide - a pretty easy Lake to learn.
You will be there at a good time for bass, walleye, and pike ... could even catch a muskie!
Big wind would be the ONLY hurdle you may encounter
A muskie would be a once in a lifetime fish for me! Wind we just go to the opposite side, or so I'm told. We are definitely going for the smallies and pike. Others will be bonus fish.
