Hello to all, I am primarily a bass fisherman these days but I’ve done more than my share of offshore and river fishing in Fl. As the areas that I fish in are winding down and getting too hot for me to fish for the bass that I like to catch I have found myself playing with the Mayans cichlids. Just wondering if anyone else out there has been to. Pan fishing type fishing is usually not my cup of tea but I gotta say catching these Mayans cichlids on a really light tackle is one heck of a blast. I’m not comparing it to a mahi-mahi screaming your line out or anything but on ultralight tackle they are fun .They put up more of a fight than any bluegills I’ve ever caught and are they ever tasty.

Nice!! I hear they do put up a heckuva fight--proportionately the same as peacock bass, a vicious fighter, also a cichlid. Would you say their taste is similar to tilapia (which is also a cichlid)?

I am not a big fan of tilapia, but the Mayans Cichlid has a sweeter flavor to me. I am very picky about the type of freshwater fish I eat and the amount of freshwater fish I eat but I have found myself enamored with catching this fish just for the simplicity sake of bringing me back to childhood fishing practically and having a ball doing it and being able to bring home some groceries to boot. I know a lot of people probably look down their nose at it but then I say I don’t care, it’s a lot of fun and I get to have some food to eat and know where it came from.

Can't agree with you more on your last two sentences, Brad. It'd be interesting to take a poll on here when folks first became hooked on fishing, and I dare say a sizeable majority would say childhood.🎣🎣🎣

It would be interesting to see a poll on that, and I do believe I agree that most hard-core fisherman got the itch during their childhood. I’m headed out bright and early tomorrow morning to try and catch some more cichlids. I will probably be off the water by 11:30 AM. It’ll be close to 90° by then.

Live in Port Saint Lucie. Just went to a favorite place of mine and fished exclusively for Mayan cichlids. Kept 10 nice fat ones. Great fight on light tackle and GREAT eating…….

Likewise good the same thing today and caught probably 20-ish and kept ten as well. Been catching quite a few and a half to three-quarter pound range and one last week that was a pound and a quarter and caught them super light line and Rod. Fun stuff.

What are you using for bait. I use live worms with success. I haven't had any luck with lures which is my preferred method.
