I was out in my kayak alone this morning and found a cove off Mesquite Bay that had a lot of spawning Sunfish. Caught 7 and released but missed 10 or more as they just weren't holding on long enough to get them in. And the size kept getting bigger as I kept at it. The middle photo was the 1st fish and the smallest. Plus in the clear water you could see them attacking a small piece of crawler. Perfect sunny Arizona day and trolling back to the ramp with a square bill and had a nice 3# Largemouth hit it.
If I decide to take some home this week, only the males or do you think it matters as we seem to have a huge population?

Are they good eating? Never heard of them here in NC.

Oh yeah I'm looking to have a fish fry, they're in the Bluegill family and the bigger ones are easily over a pound to a pound and a half.

Langer - they spawn up to five times a year and lay up to 100K eggs a pop. And they tend to vastly outnumber other species in just about every body of water they inhabit. Plus you have an unlimited daily bag limit for sunfish in AZ. I say go for it!
Yes the sunfish is very good eating tried them and lemon flavored cornmeal
Bluegills (or sunfish) are delicious, enjoy!
Nice job Langer! I hope to be down your way in about a week.
Check your regs for Lake Havasu! There is a 25 per day limit on Sunfish and Crappie, any combination. We have general regulations and "Special" regulations, in specific areas. Tight lines and sunny days!

Well I didn't have to worry about limits yesterday. The two of us went out and they were completely gone, went to several coves where I had seen plenty on Saturday and by Sunday nowhere to be found. Trolling a square bill on the way back to the launch ramp, I picked up a 2 lb Largemouth but other than that it was a slow day in Arizona. That's fishing!

YES! Very good eating, fry is best but I've even used in fish stew and gumbo.
