I will be heading to Alamo Lake in Arizona week of May 15th. To fish for Crappies. Being a Transplant from the PNW and a once avid Steelhead and Salmon fisherman with both Gear and a Fly Rod, I am now ready to take on Warm Water species, beginning with Crappie !! Any pointers and advice would be greatly appreciated. I understand Alamo Lake is a good sized body of water. I plan on fishing out of a 9’ Colorado XT Pontoon Boat with electric motor as well trying some Bank Fishing. I plan on practicing catch and release the first couple days and hopefully keep a few on the last day for Table Fare 😁😁 have never tasted Crappie before!!
Crappie are like sunfish/ bluegills.. Great eating and a bit larger filets!
Alamo has been muddy due to the rain and snow melt run off. We typically go there the first week of April but passed on it this year due to the muddy water. My guess is by now the crappie have spawned and may not be as shallow. We've done well there with curly tailed grubs dipped in garlic scented fish attractant. Roadrunner underspins will work well to locate fish if they aren't schooled up on brush piles or submerged trees. The north end of the lake is shallower with plenty of brush to search for them.
I haven't seen a recent report on water clarity at Alamo in a few weeks. Good luck and report back please.
Hopefully you will enjoy the taste of Crappie. They are my #3 favorite fish to eat behind the Yellow Lake Perch and Walleye.
You my friend are in for a real treat if you have never had crappie! By far my favorite fresh water fish! They taste amazing!!!
Good luck on your trip hope you catch a bunch!
