The shad bite was on today out of Fletchers Boathouse. I know it’s in DC but this Maryland boy made the trip to see what was going on.

Nice! Are they spawning? Shad roe, lightly breaded in seasoned panko, and sautéed in brown butter and lemon juice--one of my favorite to make (and eat!).

Nice going ww. I just googled that area rather impressive. Quite a haul from this area though.

Have you ever launched on the Maryland side of the 301 Potomac river bridge? I used to travel 301 back and forth to NC twice a week and I saw a marina down there and was curious how the waters were there.

Nice catch there Wwerner! From the photo...it appears that you are fishing from kayak? Very cool! If not...still cool catching the shad any way it works!

I ate pickled hickory shad and it was good. There is an annual shadfest at Lambertville, NJ, where chefs prepare shad that is very delicious. When I was a kid, I paid 10 cents per pound for shad that I used for catfish bait.

Driven across the bridge many times and have seen the marina but haven’t launched from there. My dad took me to the power plant to the left 60 years ago to fish where the water is discharged after cooling the plant. Froze our asses off and didn’t catch anything. Can’t do that anymore.

Thanks for getting back to me ww. Curiosity might just get the best of me some slow day and drive down there. I am a kayaker, so leery of the waters i enter. Some big ships pass through there.

Keep posting from your spot there it looks really nice. Even just scenery pics, good to see other parts of the state.

Can you catch shad from shore near Fletchers? Will they hit artificial?

You can fish from the shore. We used small silver spoons which were very effective. And we saw lots of fish being caught from the shore.

Catch & release from Fletcher's Cove? That must be new. How far south from the dock were you? I was last there last July fishing for cats.

The young man at Fletchers dock told me it’s catch and release. We went upriver less than a mile. And there are big cats in the river.
