Swiss army, my son gave me the yellow version about 35 years ago when I used to backpack. It glows in the dark in the case of dropping at night in use. At the time of that I already had a Swiss army red and the Swiss army pocket watch which now is my grandson's. SWISS ARMY IS THE ONE ! We're talking 35 years in the pocket.

That was interesting bring back an old blade and put into use again! Find an old Imperial, Uncle Henry or a Victorinox (Swiss Army) small 2-3 blade pocket knife! No big deal if lost, had many growing up and learning how to sharpen knives!

I have liked the old Grandad, old Henry and others. The one
I liked the most is the Barlow style. There are several on the market today, and I would confer that the ones made here in the USA are of the best. If you find any of the older knives from Germany, you cannot go wrong. You can check out knife kits for him. There are several brands on the market here in the US that are easy to make and he would likely keep longer and really like a lot. Just look them up on the net as there are several company’s out there. Good luck and have fun.

[quote=J.R. Sloan]Here's just a suggestion I have used with some of my umpteen male grandkids over the years.
My experience is that unless it's otherwise cherished, the first jackknife will likely get lost, broken opening a rusty can or lost overboard.
On the other hand, nearly every neighborhood has a pawnshop or used-stuff store that ('way in the back someplace) has a box that serves as a home for all the lost and misplaced jackknives that ever toured that neighborhood or its old-guys' tool collections.
Go there, with the kid, and pick out a couple of the knives that need some work to restore (they'll only cost a few bucks in restorable condition).
Then go by your hardware store and buy a whetstone and a couple of sheets of wet-ot-dry sanding paper, starting at about 400 grit all the way to 1000 grit.= ]
Then, offer to give your kid a lifetime knife supply, if only he'll spend the time with you to put these first two knives into condition so he's got his very own, with his own work in the tool.

Awesome plan. The kid gets quality time and a good knife and skills.

Me thinks one that will fit his hand, easy to get blades out, durable nuff to not rust (to bad in tackle box) and stay sharp. Hard to beat old Boy Scout knifes. Enjoy being with him, teach him water safety and sportsmanship.

Choose the Swiss Army model that has practical variety of blades and order it engraved for little extra cost. Their steel is amazingly durable for the price and great quality.

My suggestion would for a single blade lock back knife. You only need one blade in a knife if it's a good quality blade. Buck Folding Hunter or Case Shark Folding Hunter are two blades that come to my mind. Both are water proof Stainless Steel and exceptionally easy to keep sharp enough to shave with. And expensive enough to justify and recognise that it's a high class tool that warrants it be proudly taken care of. And both come with a leather sheath for added protection or worn on the belt at times or either at the rite time, Jer

EBay is a great place to look and buy a knife .If you look very long you may find a scout knife like you had. There are lots of older knives on there .If you want to get him something that was made when companies believed in making quality products. A canoe stylemail knife is my favorite to carry it has a decent size main blade and a pen knife blade they also ride well in your pocket.Old Timer brand made in the USA is a very easy knife to find on ebay for a good price.they hold a keen edge and are easy to sharpen. But you are the final say in what you want him to have, brand and style.A case brand from the 1970s decade are an awesome knives .I own several case Boy Scout knives the 1970s that were purchased on ebay for around $25 us dollars to $35us .That's what I gave to my 15 year old son to take on our fishing adventures.Good luck on finding him the perfect knife.Good fishing.

I agree with the Leatherman. I've had mine so long the leather pouch almost has no black finish on it.
Never in my boat or hunting without in on my hip. Have fixed everything from glasses to motor repairs.
Keep thinking about getting one of the new ones but can't think of anything they could do that I couldn't do with my old one.

Big fan of anything made by Gerber. Excellent knives for every need, stellar multi-tool.... made in Portland OR, good ol' USA ! Might be a tad spendy for a kid gift, though ?!? I have a Barlow 2-blade that I got in about '62 or '63, that I carried for decades and served me well. Definitely teach him how to sharpen, safety skills, etc..... the most basic of all tools, yet the choices seem endless....go figure !

Whatever you pick, I recommend one with a lock open blade. This will keep a beginner from folding the blade back on to his fingers.

I own three different models of Swiss Army knives with multiple blades and on each knife the largest blade locks open. The best of both types of pocket knives.

Swiss Army knives are ok. But if you want something that he’ll have for a lifetime, leatherman makes an Awsome product. My uncle has gotten me 3 over the years and I’ve had the oldest one for over a decade. I still thank him to this day for getting me them.
