Very nice pics and looks like a fun time. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you DVTracker! Glad that you enjoyed the summary. I rarely get a chance to fish saltwater, and it has been a long time since I got a line wet in any ocean! I faithfully washed all my gear after each use with a freshwater rinse to keep items from corroding. It is amazing what will happen to your tackle just overnight!

Just for an extra margin of mental comfort, I took my fishing rods to Lake Michigan this afternoon and made some long casts to get the working line out, and then with a nice wind blowing at my back, walked along the beach and let it flow out another few hundred feet to reach the "buried" core line so it could all get wet with another fresh water bath.

What a great trip and getaway from the dreary Michigan spring! Surf fishing looks like fun and not knowing what will bite makes it interesting. Good to hear from you! Walleyes open this weekend.

Thank you Ryp! We enjoyed seeing the progression of tree budding as we drove Southward. I especially enjoy seeing the Redbuds in bloom. Things are greening up around home and that helps take the "grey" out for sure!

Good luck if you head out for the walleyes! I was leaning towards going for trout...but now you have given me an alternate idea!

Great trip.

Thank you NJ219bands! I set up a special new tackle box yesterday dedicated just for saltwater fishing now, and can hardly wait until we get a chance to go back next year. I had good luck using large Kastmasters with buck tail fly hooks, so I plan to get busy at my fly tying vice and make up some other tempting color patterns to adorn the lures in a custom way. The fish seemed to like that extra teaser on the hook!

I replaced the treble hooks on my metals, like Kastmaster, with a second split ring and single hook synthetic buck tail that my brother John made and catch more fish. Two split rings are better than one on metals.

Good idea about swapping out the trebles. There was an awesome tackle shop in Orange Beach named J & M Tackle, and I was able to purchase some Mustad brand salt water grade single hooks in various sizes to do exactly what you mentioned. Interesting idea about using synthetic for the "hair"...instead of natural buck tail. Glad you mentioned that...I think I will do the same thing and not use deer hair. Some color, with a little tinsel/mylar fibers for flash is what I have in mind.

The idea of adding a second split ring is intriguing too. I will do that as well! Thank you!

Just returned from a fantastic journey to the Orange Beach Alabama region. Managed to get quite a bit of fishing and kayaking done during the stay. Some days were calm, and others were "double red flag" with tremendous winds. Water clarity ranged from clear to muddy depending on the wind directions.

Tried to start each day with a few hours of fishing, followed by beach walking and then some paddling. Caught quite a few brand new species to me...although most of these are routine for those of you that frequent the salty coastlines on a regular basis!

Typically I ended up fishing from the beach surf with bait, and from the kayak while trolling or casting lures. The dedicated fishing pier looked enticing, but after spending some time checking it out I decided that it was just too crowded and I felt a bit uneasy with all the hooks being flung around by tourists like myself!

Pompano, Spanish mackerel, jack crevalle, puffer fish, bluefish and those pesky little "sail cats" were among the primary species encountered. I almost had a chance to cast for redfish but since my 7 day temporary non resident license had expired I was only able to sit and observe a nice group while they were "tailing" in a weedy flat during an afternoon of scouting via my kayak. I can't tell you how annoying it was just to sit there 15 feet away and drool! It looked like half a dozen canoe paddles sticking up out of the water!

Plenty of good fun just paddling close to shore on early mornings before the local beach enthusiasts were out and about. Spider crabs reeling along like tiny tumbleweeds, birds awakening from their night slumber and dolphins cruising along in search of a breakfast snack. At one point an osprey dipped down in front of me and snatched a good sized ballyhoo or mullet. It flew very low, right over top of me, as if to show off the catch. It made me grin and chuckle right out loud! Whatever it caught was just over a foot long, bright silver and quite slender.

This was a first time visit for my wife and I, and we enjoyed our vacation so much that we booked the same condo again for next year...only this time for 3 weeks! I plan to purchase the full annual salt license so time does not run out for fishing opportunities!

Our local inland stream trout fishing season opens this weekend in Michigan, so I need to clear the salty cobwebs from my head and gear up for a season of freshwater fishing. I think I will take a kayak to a favorite lake, and save stream wading for when the weather gets a little warmer and the bugs start to hatch!

Thank you Whitey! In some respects I wish we lived closer to salt water, so I could enjoy the diversity more often! That yellow kayak is an "oldy but goody", and I think it is going on 30 years now!

Synthetic is better than deer hair for bluefish because one bluefish can remove most of the natural hair from a teaser. Deer hair is good for striped bass. Let us know if your catch rate increases.

Thank you...and "yes" they tend to be somewhat costly...although inflation has probably affected things over the years. Back in the day they still commanded a fair price due to all the hand labor that went into making them. No mass production when Easy Rider started manufacturing them back in 1970.

Thank you for checking out the posting. You may be correct about that mackerel photo. Since many of these fish were first time catches for me I was relying on a small "salt water" fish guide book that I purchased to help ID things. I don't think that the Sierra Mackerel was even mentioned in my little book. Thank you for the clarification!

The catfish I happened to include in the story is a hard head cat...and not a gafftop...although I did catch some of both varieties.
