No "yellow" beer for me, thank you.
Porters and Stouts are both tasty and 'filling'...the epitome of "bread in a glass". My all-time favorite commercially available, is one that I cannot find since the pandemic...Australia's Sheaf Stout.
However Ninkasi's "Oatis", an oatmeal Stout, is a close second, along with Caldera (a microbrewery just down the road in Ashland Oregon) "Pilot Rock Porter" (now available in cans so we can avoid taking glass on the boat, but still drink GOOD beer while out fishing).
There are MANY others that I consider excellent brews, particularly the "seasonal ales" like Deschutes' "Jubelale". My latest good find is a black ale called "Irish Death".
By far the best beer I have ever tasted is a limited release Stout, tap-only, (only available at the Caldera Tap House Restaurant in Ashland) by Caldera called "Mogli". Named after the brewery owner's ex-girlfriend's black Lab (RIP, you fine dog !), it is as black as its namesake and as strong (11.5%?), as well. It's $8/pint and the bartender will only pour you two...no more !
My history with beer, first drinking it as a youth out bucking hay with my older cousins, as a college student semi-regularly over-embibing (!), pouring it as a bartender....in college and again as a 30+yr old, running the bar at our local ski slope for a couple of seasons....and now, a retiree who almost always has 3-6 various beers in the fridge out in the shop and at least one in the kitchen fridge....I can truly say that the one and only thing I have in common with a certain Supreme Court Judge is.....I LIKE BEER !
