Anyone know a thing or two abojt these old
Johnson motors?? Got one that came with the John boat I bought along with a trolling motor.. all for 200$… try to figure out what to do with it…? Or possibly the value of it running or not running..? The guy before me did said before he hung it up in his shed that it did run… but I know you can hear that kind of thing all the time… jus curious if anyone knows anything about em.. thanks in advanced !!!
Is it a 6hp?
They are pretty much bulletproof and may need a coil or carb cleaning is about all that goes bad if anything. The rope to pull start em
Looks like my buddies old 9 1/2hp, we couldn’t kill that thing. Great motor, very quiet!
I hope you get it running!
If try to start you probably don't want to dry start it . You need to have the prop in a water barrel or tub as that's part of the cooling system. Without the water they heat up very quickly and ruin it.
There’s a term for whatever the thing is to do that right? Like the piece you buy
THey were among the most reliable motors ever made. I bought a 9.9 years ago that had Sat for 10 years. It started on the first pull and never stopped running. If it needs some parts it will be worth spending the money
I got one just like it 9.9 on my 13 ft Geenoe. I call it my water rocket. Almost as much fun as fishing.

Others have given good advise. Don't even start without water from muffs or a barrel. The water pump impeller can be ruined from overheat in seconds without water. By the way, I'd change the impeller to be safe and check the spark. Should jump 3/8" for each cylinder. 50/1 is the mix ratio. If it doesn't run right clean the carb.
Good luck
My Brother got an Evinrude just like that really cheap and had me work on it. Good little motor! I had to replace the coils in the magneto, they're molded in resin that had cracked. As long as I had the flywheel off, I gave it new points and condensers. I didn't fully disassemble the carburetor, just took off the float bowl and cleaned everything up with a spray can of carburetor cleaner. The little motor runs like a fine Swiss watch!
It's a real fisherman's motor, very low profile so that it's not in the way when you're fishing around the back end of the boat, or trolling.
those old 9.9s still fetch a pretty penney.
bet they'll out live a lot of the newer 4 strokes.
motor alone worth way more
