Hello,
My friend and I were bank fishing on last Wednesday at Lawrence Shoals (a GA Power Lake) and we realized that a snake was sunning in a tree less than 10 feet from us in two different areas. Can someone identify them for me please, and THANK YOU.

NH fishing is the place for me. Whenever I've been on a fire or hurricane response in the south, the stress level increases significantly. No thank you!

Those my friend are Cottonmouth water moccasins. They like most snakes prefer to be left alone. They are poisonous and can ruin your day.

I think they are BOTH Moccasins, just a different color variation.
Have seen LOTS of them that look like both of those pictured. 1 giveaway is the girth. Most water snakes don't have that. Just Sayin.

I was crappie fishing at Reelfoot Lake in west Tennessee several years ago and had several water moccasins try to climb in the boat. Not very pleasant fishing conditions. Caught a lot of slabs though.

First pic is definitely a Water Snake. You can make out the banding if you look close. Harmless but can inflict a nasty bite if you screw with them.

The Second I am Not sure. COULD be a cottonmouth and I will defer to others you can magnify the pic. I can't but this guy says he can see the pits near its nostrils... That is a trademark of a viper like the cottonmouth.

Incredible story about cottonmouths dropping in to a froggers boat!!!!

It appears to be a Cottonmoutrh They are venomous and are best left alone. They are in the tree sunning or waiting for dinner to come along.

Here are two pictures of two cottonmouths I found laying in the same treetop that had fallen into a creek. I was flipping a jig all around that treetop and never noticed the snake in the first picture as it laid completely still. I didn’t see the dark colored one until I was about three feet from it as I worked my boat around the end of the tree. The light colored one was the female and you can see she has eggs in her. The happy father is the darker of the two.

Well to me ALL 4 pics really resemble one another.
Like I said earlier, I believe that ALL the pics are of Water Moccasins.

If you wanna make SURE, poke it till it opens it's mouth.

I agree with Blackdog. The second is definitely a moccasin. Don’t know about the first. I have fished in Florida and could reach out with the fishing rod and touch a moccasin sunning on a branch in the springtime. We have water snakes here that look like the first.

i guess they just ornery in tx
