Shiners vs minows

My grandson will be visiting next week and I want to give him as much “catching” time as possible. My question is which will catch more LMB live minnows or live shiners?

Good question. Since both terms are generic and have several species included this could be difficult to answer.

Unfortunately I don’t know specifics. Only thing I got from the bait shop is that minnows are smaller and bigger fish like bigger prey.

You want to find a shop that sells wild shinners. You’ll have to do some research but they are the ticket for more and bigger lmb

I can't remember going to a local bait shop where I had a choice. I like to fish for Northern and I get whatever they have in the size I want. It is almost always minnows.

It’s a big thing in Florida. You need to call around and see who has wild ones. The shinners used for lmb in Florida are 10” to 12”.

Ok I didn’t know if I could help you find wild shiners but I’m usually over near Sebring I would recommend shiners though between the two I’m sure either one would work but we always have good luck with shiners

Shiners for LMB but need to be patient. Don’t set the hook when the bobber goes under. Count to 5-10 then real up slack until you feel the fish then set hook. Bass will play with shiner then begin to swallow it.

I've gotten northern on small bluegills and perch. Never a bass. Maybe where I've fished the bass just aren't that big.
