In the 1950's The State of Colorado instituted a program to create a rustic sign for all entrances to the State. The signs were made in the prisons. In 1989 the powers that be decided that a more colorful sign was needed. A college contest was held to design a colorful sign and one was selected as the winner. Alas, after only eight years the signs were removed due to a public outcry that wanted to return to the "old west rustic signs". The outcry was so vehement that the old rustic wild west signs were returned. Thus, the Welcome/Leaving Colorado signs are once more brown with white lettering. Who says public opinion can't change things!
